A great tool for improvment

The Staright-A Conspiracy hits home with me.

What I liked:

+ It is a book which everyone can pick up.
+ It has a lot of insight and offers great explanations (even though I myself found it to be almost too thurrow).
+ Demonstrates the potential of every person and really convinces the reader that they, as well as everyone else, can pursuit and achieve greatness.

What I thought could be improved:

- The Straight-A conspiracy has a lot of small boxes with "interesting" and vaguely related facts. I myself found some of them amusing, but they were, generally, just distracting.
- (I cannot believe I am writing this, but) The book tries too hard to be easy to read. It talks directly to the reader in a almost silly way from time to time.

Overall, it is a book I wish I would have read five years ago; however, even to a student at university, such as myself, the book was a good read. If you are struggling with school or just generally want to improve your outlook on learning new things, this is one of many books which might help you.

Excellent high School Text

I teach a high school course for struggling students. These are kids who have tremendous aptitude but have lost confidence in their ability to be good students. They think of themselves as not smart, bad at math, and believe those "facts" will never change. Reading this book together has transformed their stinking thinking and given them simple tools to begin turning those grades around. Understanding that practice is what makes a genius and that all information was once new to everyone on earth has given them hope that they, too, can master everything from Algebra to Elizabethan sonnets. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Full of gems

This is a book, I wish like the lottery I had as a kid. I am a video gaming, internet addicted, collegiate C student and part time athlete. Although with shame I admit, for the first time in my adult life, I can say I read a book front to back multiple times just for myself. Not only is it full of "Aha" insight, it's easy to read. This is especially true for someone frustrated with learning complex new things well, or quickly (I'm pointing to myself). If you can't get your kid to read it, read it for them or read it to them. We need this type of wisdom as a country and as a species. Thank you Hunter Maats for breaking down and spelling out this problem. This is a well priced book. The delivery was also very satisfying.

Essential reading for any Madness fan

John Reed presents a history from the band's origins as the North London Invaders in 1976 to their breakup in 1986, through their reunion at Madstock in 1992 up to the band's 2009 magnum opus "The Liberty of Norton Folgate." The author doesn't make any judgments, but rather presents the good with the bad and lets the reader draw his or her own conclusions. I'm a diehard Madness fan, and I love them even more after reading this book.

The Ultimate Madness Story

This book is the ultimate Madness story for fans. Written long after the band broke up, it doesn't whitewash their story like books written during their heyday might have. It's extensive and honest. It provides an interesting look at the bands beginnings, their popularity during the 80s, and what they've been up to since then.

Tells you both everything and nothing about Madness

On page 235 of this book the author writes "It's difficult to ascertain whether Barson's decision [to quit the band] was due to [...] or [...] or [...] or [...] or a combination of the above". Think about this for a moment - a 536 page book about Madness and the author cannot explain one of the key - if not the key - events in the band's history. The problem here is that Reed did not actually speak to any of the members of the band while writing this book, instead relying on previously published interviews, the opinions of members of their entourage, and even album sleeve notes. What you end up with is a meticulous list of things that Madness did but without any real insight or understanding of why they did them. Shame really, as Reed displays an obvious fondness for the band and an eye for detail elsewhere. However, I've heard that Suggs' recently published autobiography does not delve too deeply into the workings of Madness, so this might be the best study of the Nutty Boys on the market. For the time being, anyway.

There were several sections on new training methods, and explained in easy to understand terms, the proper methodology in developing a training program. Powerful and profound

As a new student of music I was filled with questions. Why exactly did we humans (unlike animals) evolve to appreciate music? What survival benefit could it have provided? And how exactly does music give us pleasure? What is really going on in the body when a great piece of music touches our inner soul to the point of giving us goose bumps? Unfortunately I found teachers and peers not only devoid of answers to such questions, but completely unreceptive to them. Many people are even hostile towards such questions. I felt surrounded by automatons content only with pushing levers and petals on their instruments, completely disinterested in the exact nature of what they were doing. I find such people devoid of one of the most important instincts that supposedly separates us from the animal kingdom, high curiosity.

Robert Jourdain's book, Music, the Brain and Ecstasy, was exactly what I needed to read. He explains how the origin of music appreciation in humans is a consequence of the evolution of speech to improve social interaction, which has survival advantage. He explains how pleasure in music is a consequence of a series of deviations from a tonal center (usually the tonic note or triad of the key in which the music is composed), which introduces conflict in the brain, followed by a return to the tonal center, which provides satisfactory resolution. He explains how such conflict and resolution can be composed into four different aspects of music: rhythm, melody. phrase, and harmony. Ecstasy is achieved when resolution is provided after a conflict has reached the limit in tonal space and time of the listener's comprehension ability. Throughout the book he supports his presentation with real, physical phenomena within the body, mostly within the brain. The presentation seems very valid scientifically. Personally, I think he makes fools out of the teachers, musicians, and friends with whom I have been associating.

Some previous reviewers have been harsh, but I believe them to be out of context. For example, one gave the following quote from the book:

"Almost anything that can be said in Arabic can be faithfully translated into Chinese or Finnish or Navajo."

The reviewer claimed that this would be considered erroneous by any anyone who has ever worked on language translation. I myself am bilingual (English and French), and I believe that although there is some truth to this reviewer's opinion when it comes to the fine nuances of different languages, his comment is entirely out of context and blown out of proportion. In the book Robert Jourdain is referring to the accuracy of all languages to construct simple statements accurately. A sentence like, "On your way home, please go down to the corner store and pick up a loaf of bread." (I made up that sentence myself to make my point) Such a simple statement can be said in almost any human language where bread, home, and corner store have meaning. In contrast, music cannot be composed to deliver such exact meaning. Music produces emotional responses, but it is not possible to accurately define an exact message. Jourdain even suggests that Debussy's La Mere (The Sea) conjures up thoughts of the actual sea most probably as a consequence of its title. Had Debussy called the piece something else, like "The Storm", or "The Wind", or "The Final Salvation of Mankind", people would willingly accommodate by claiming that the music conjured up such images as well. My feeling is that this reviewer, like many people, is too caught up trying to prove what he thinks he knows about a subject rather than listen openly to what the author is really saying. Yes, there are differences in the accuracy of different languages. I myself do prefer to read certain novels in French rather than their English translations. It's not that the translations are inaccurate on the whole, but mostly because the text flows better in the original language. And yes, there are often fine nuances, mostly cultural, that do get lost in translation, but it is not often enough to cause a complete breakdown in meaning . But give me a break, that is not what Robert Jourdain was talking about. The key to the author's intent is the first word of the above quote: "Almost". Almost means almost.

Another reviewer complained that the book was too much about the brain rather than music. Well, where in the body does that person figure music appreciation occurs, if not the brain? Surely a complete explanation of music appreciation must be more about the brain than anything else?

Another reviewer complained that the book read too much like a textbook and is therefore uninteresting. Excuse me? Where exactly do we all learn the most interesting concepts in life if not from textbooks? Yes, it is a difficult read. I had to read it twice, and believe me, on the second reading I learned a tremendous amount. But that is not a disadvantage. That is exactly what makes the book great.

Throughout the book Robert Jourdain reminds the reader of how music challenges the brain and that without a certain mental capacity on the part of the listener much music cannot be appreciated. I myself learned this lesson in the world of chess. Without a certain mental capacity, certain people are simply not capable to playing great chess, no matter how hard they try. I was forced to give up chess competition because I did not possess the mental skills to achieve the rating (level of play) that I aspired to. Perhaps the same thing could be said about Robert Jourdain's book. Unless you possess a certain minimum mental capacity, and unless you take the time to read him carefully and apply your mental capacity to what you read, you will probably be unable to appreciate much of what he has to say.

I myself cannot say that this is one of the greatest books ever written on the subject. I am just a beginning music student and I have not yet read very widely. And I'm sure I will learn further in my education that Robert Jourdain is not the final word on music. Also, I suspect that he himself did not originate much what he has presented. That's perfectly valid. The book has a bibliography. The important thing for me is that at my point in life, this book was like a bolt of lightning awakening me to a whole new world that was unknown to me, a world that remains unknown to others around me who I would expect would know better but who lack the curiosity or perhaps the mental skills. After reading this book I find I am more willing to accept music theory as it is presented to me (as a set of unquestionable strict rules) without being plagued by nagging doubts about their meaning or validity. And I find that now I cannot study or listen to music, or work on my piano practice without thinking about this book in some way. It has affected me profoundly.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is genuinely curious about the nature of music and is frustrated by a world filled with phony intellectuals who try to suppress true curiosity with blind faith in rules that they are unable to properly validate. This book attacks the subject of music appreciation head on from a scientific point of view and carries a real and enlightening message.

good overview of the mainstream literature

This is an excellent survey of the mainstream psychology of music, from the neurology of the ear to the psychology of composing. There is a wealth of information about the perception and cognition of musical sound. However, as others have noted, Jourdain really doesn't deliver on the "ecstasy" in his title. To some extent that is a limitation of the research base he draws on, which is weak on emotion and almost completely silent on ecstasy. However, quite a bit of anecdotal evidence is available, but Jourdain doesn't review it.

About the Author

David Hanscom, MD is an orthopedic spine surgeon who has been performing complex spine surgery since 1986. Much of his practice has been helping patients out of a deep hole caused by multiple failed spine surgeries. He spent the first eight years of his practice focusing on surgical solutions and noticed that surgery alone was rarely successful in accomplishing its goal. He successfully resolved his own chronic pain in 2003 after suffering for 15 years. He began to share his experience with his patients, and by helping his patients address all aspects of chronic pain, including physical conditioning and the central nervous system, he has witnessed many patients become pain free.

Written by a most experienced and knowledgable orthopedic spine surgeon, this book provides a non-surgical approach for the treatment of chronic back pain, for both surgical and non-surgical patients.
Surgical intervention for chronic back pain has been fraught with poor postoperative results.
Dr. Hanscom himself bears testimony to the struggle of unresolved chronic pain which ultimately became the foundation and catalyst for his research and the development of his Back in Control program.
He possesses a wide experience with surgical patients whose back pain and associated quality of life had not substantially improved following surgical intervention.
Dr. Hanscom has approached the multi-faceted ubiquitous ailment of chronic pain from scientific research of neurophysiological pain pathways.
His non-surgical program for chronic pain treatment has been proven efficacious.
DOC, direct your own care, is outlined in 4 sequential stages which requires self indulgence and perservence.

Dr. Hanscom focuses our lens onto other, less well known, etiologies of pain. Drawing from a huge experience and wisdom, the author provides the reader with new ways to view and subsequently treat pain. As outlined in the text, the traditional concepts of pain are often not sufficient to best treat patients who are suffering and moreover, the treatments themselves often do more harm than good. However, the current medical climate (emphasized in chapter 15) has evolved to not have a proclivity to look for better ways of understanding and treating many pain syndromes. As a neuroscientist, chapter 3 was most interesting to me and focuses on imbedding pain pathways. In the end, anyone (both lay or medical professional) in chronic pain or who knows someone with this issue, will find a wealth of knowledge in this approximately 300 page easy to read book and will probably find many answers and treatment strategies.

An amazingly helpful book! Dr. Hanscom shows that he really understands what chronic pain sufferers are going through, by sharing his own experience and those of the patients he has helped. The genius of his approach is that it is so straightforward - anyone who wants to escape chronic pain and makes the commitment can use his techniques and suggestions. I found that this book is one of those rare gems - truly life changing on many levels.

Leonardo Barroso is an unscrupulous Mexican oligarch whose fortress of a villa is only a short drive from the "crystal frontier" of the title, and each one of the nine stories comprising this work explores the life of someone touched by him. There's Juan Zamora, whose medical studies at Cornell were made possible by the stratagems of Barroso; the beautiful Michelina from Mexico City, whom Barroso marries; off to his son and then takes as his own, and the working girls of Barroso's maquiladoras, who lust after the gringo male dancers of the clubs. The outrageous racism of Fuentes's Anglo characters, such as Miss Amy Dunbar and border patrol Dan Polonsky, may seem excessive and stereotyped, but it is also hard to deny that such attitudes exist along this troubled border. Fuentes masterfully interweaves Mexican politics, economics, and history within the individual stories, giving a brilliant update on relations between an extremely poor country and the richest in the world. Fuentes has no qualms about using fiction as a vehicle for social analysis. When this union between art and commentary succeeds, it generates indelible scenes of tremendous passion, of which there are many in this set of nine loosely connected stories, but when it fails, Fuentes' tales turn awkward. It may be that Fuentes' immense sense of responsibility toward Mexico and its people--a commitment that compels him to dramatize the entrenched corruption and ferocious poverty that drive so many people across the border--at times simply overwhelms the delicate emotional balance crucial to the magic of a story. That said, these are nonetheless gleaming fables about the volatile and urgent relationship between Mexico and the U.S., unnerving stories rich in metaphor, wit, and remarkable characters, from Don Leonardo Barroso, an ambiguous figure of great wealth and power, to Juan Zamora, who leaves his oppressively poor life in Mexico City to study medicine at Cornell, where he discovers both his homosexuality and his deep compassion. Then there's young, vulnerable Marina, who dreams of seeing the ocean as she works assembling televisions in a factory along the border, and the hero of the haunting title story, Lisandro Chavez, who, along with dozens of other men, is flown into Manhattan to spend a weekend cleaning the inside of a glass skyscraper, the latest high-tech form of migrant labor. Fuentes boldly shines his high beams on "the illusory crystal divider, the glass membrane between Mexico and the U.S.," thus illuminating both our vast differences and our manifold connection. A sardonic ``novel in nine stories'' about relations between the US and Mexico, by the latter country's acclaimed author of such cosmopolitan fictions as Terra Nostra (1976) and The Campaign (1991), among others. Each story portrays a conflict involving a family member, intimate, or business associate of ``the powerful political Leonardo Barroso,'' a deal- and king-maker with a foot in both countries and a shadowy demeanor and personal history. For example, ``A Capital Girl'' traces the emotional vacillations endured by Michelina, an impressionable young woman who idolizes her godfather, Leonardo, as a result accepting marriage to his deeply unstable son Mariano. These and other characters reappear in several stories, a few of which are rather too nakedly discursive (e.g., the wheelchair-bound narrator's monologue in ``The Line of Oblivion,'' and a predictably manic-depressive relationship between a wealthy white matron and her abused Mexican housemaid in ``Girlfriends''). Indeed, most of the stories are too frequently interrupted by ironic commentaries on both American arrogance and myopia and Mexican illiteracy and inertia. However, ``Spoils'' presents a delicious characterization of its protagonist Dionisio, a cooking expert and gourmet explorer of several species of appetites. And in ``Malintzin Las Maquilas''--a lively, sexy story whose sociopolitical content emerges naturally from its character relationships--Fuentes vividly depicts the volatile bonding among three women factory workers. The long (and uneven) climactic story, ``Rio Grande, Rio Bravo,'' explores in too pat a fashion the human and diplomatic ramifications of ``crossing the border,'' and brings the volume to a stagy (if perfectly logical) violent end. A vast improvement over Fuentes's recent self-indulgent metafiction Diana (1995), and a pretty creditable dramatization of the mocking rhyme with which the book leaves us: ``poor Mexico,/poor United States,/so far from God,/so near to one another.'' -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Ambivalent novel long on poetry, short on solutions

Tedious novel in the form of nine linked stories shows Mexican life from multiple angles, none too flattering. The crystal frontier of the title is, of course, the U.S.-Mexican border; what matters here is less the border as geopolitical fact and more its impact on the Mexican psyche. The author aims his barbs at both sides of the border; there's little surprising here except perhaps for the portrayal of a disdainful Mexican upper class that couldn't care less about how the other half lives or whether it lives or starves. Book clubs will find this a useful tool for stirring up discussion on the illegal drug and immigration issues whether they read through to the end or not; those who do will be rewarded with a chapter written half in normal prose and half in surreal fragmentary lines of poetry, the effect of which is not unlike sitting through a Tarkovsky double-feature.

An exercise in empathy

An achingly beautiful, haunting series of interwoven stories...people I know, people I can imagine. Viewing events through the eyes of different people was reminiscent of Kurasawa's Rashomon. As a sucker for short stories, my favorite was the title piece.

About the Author
Daniel Ladinsky has published four collections of poems by the great Sufi poet Hafiz: A Year with Hafiz, The Gift, The Subject Tonight Is Love, and I Heard God Laughing. His most recent collection is The Purity of Desire: 100 Poems of Rumi. For six years, he made his home in a spiritual community in western India, where he worked and lived with the intimate disciples and family of Avatar Meher Baba. He lives in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Partners Across Time

There are just a few books that give the gift of insight at each reading, each touch; A Year With Hafiz: Daily Contemplations is my favorite new one among them. It is presented as a day book: a poem on each page for each date throughout the year. The poetry is tethered in oneness, firmly fixed in sacred covenant, yet at the same time rooted in the human condition of wild mind and chaotic phenomena -- creative madness within the laws of love. The poems may be grounded in heaven but on earth they are loose cannons. In A Year With Hafiz, this grounded madness happens in each poem on each page. Whatever today's date, let this day be sanctified and wild. And such guidance comes from a book you're happy to hold in your hand. The print edition is particularly attractive, with an embossed cover and rough-cut pages.

Ladinsky's bold use of modern idioms and references gives the reader a sense that the poems, though clearly from an ancient time, arise from our quotidian lives. With an Aikido-like grace, the energy is flipped from then to now. Hafiz and Ladinsky seem to be authentic partners across time.

Now be honest with me, Gentle Customer-Review Reader, isn't there only so much wisdom teaching a body can use? If you try to pack it in, doesn't most of it go stale and get tossed, like stuff in an overfull fridge? A Year With Hafiz metes out wisdom so you can let it cook and cool, and then internalize it at your leisure. Then it's the next day, and you're hungry again, and you're chewing on something delicious again. Ladinsky has already done a number of Hafiz books, each a treasure on its own, but this one, aside from the high art of its poetry, is as practical for everyday life as a kitchen table.

If I started quoting from the book I wouldn't be able to stop, but here are three lines (from the entry of February 24) that caught me between the eyes:

If you can get the balance right between you
and others, and you and death, shops will
start selling your art.

I haven't read all of A Year With Hafiz -- I'd rather space the pages out over many months -- but it's gratifying how both the ancient poet and the modern translator seem so well to understand and articulate, in metaphor after leaping metaphor, the passions and resistances of the contemporary reader. It's definitely about you.

Over the years I have read and cherished each of Daniel Ladinsky's books on Hafiz. His latest, A Year With Hafiz, is beautifully crafted and reflects the creative genius displayed in all Ladinsky's renderings of Hafiz. Ladinsky knows and understands his subject. And each rendering is beautifully presented, often with laugh-out-loud humor, and always with reverence and humility.
This work is truly inspirational. Read it and your life will be touched in unimaginably wonderful ways.

Brilliant. For exactly what and why it is.

If you read the reviews of Ladinsky's various "renderings" of Hafiz, you will find some that believe he is a "spiritual opportunist," primarily because they have issue with how Mr. Ladinsky interprets Hafiz in a very loose manner. Essentially they're saying: "He's veering wildly from the text." This is true, in a sense. These ain't literal interpretations. Yet I would call them brilliant where it counts most. When I read the daily rendering, I am almost always inspired, grounded, elevated and have a great start on being a better, more conscious person for the day. And, bottom line, is that not what I would most want from this book? To me, I can emphatically say YES! I am not hung up on the critical aspects of authenticity, I am far more benefitted from the outcomes and effects of Ladinsky's inspired interpretations. If these are interpretations or if they were created completely out of new cloth, they'd still be brilliant.
