First Blood better than any movie

Morrell became famous with this great novel. This book is nothing like the movies. In the movies Rambo is the clear cut hero while Will Teasle is the "Red Neck Sherriff" out to get someone who looks different. In the book there is not clear cut "good guy" or "bad guy." Both Rambo and Teasle are responsible for what happends. Both had a chance to let it go but don't. Rambo is going through a psychological hell in his mind when trying not to kill again but being forced to in his mind. Teasle who loses several close people in his life and is in the middle of a personal crisis at home. Both were heroes in different wars. Teasle was a hero in the Korean War while Rambo got the medal of honor for his work in Vietnam. This is a great psychological read. Both men think they are right and will not stop until the other is not breathing. Which one will win? Who is right and who is wrong? Also if you buy the book to read for the 1st time do NOT read the introduction if you don't want the ending spoiled.

First Blood, or how to Destroy a Small Town

You are a war hero, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner, finally back stateside and your welcome home has been dubious at best. Your mind is jumbled up and you don't know what you want to do so you start traveling around the country. You hitchhike or ride the bus when you can and walk otherwise. You camp out in the woods and live off the land as you are trained to do.

You are a law abiding citizen. You love your country, you fought for your country, and you've KILLED for your country. You are a trained killing machine, a weapon of mass destruction, sprung tight and ready to go off with provocation and provoke you they do. In town after town you have been rousted, not because of anything you've done but because of your scruffy appearance.

John Rambo is passing through Madison, Kentucky and decides to get a hamburger but as usual it's not that simple. Chief of Police, Wilfred Teasle has other ideas. He doesn't want any riffraff in his town so he picks the kid up and drives him to the edge of town, He wasn't particularly nasty about it, in fact he tried to be pleasant, determined but pleasant, but he wasn't so pleasant later when he found the kid in the local diner. He told the waitress to put the kid's order in a bag and hustled him back out of town. By now Teasle was very annoyed, so he went and parked on a side street and kept watch to make sure the kid did not walk back into town.

For his part the kid (Rambo) had reached his limit. If someone was going to push him, he was going to push back. He was determined to go back and confront the Chief and make him back down but of course Teasle had other ideas. He arrested the kid, took him to jail, hosed him down and started to give him a haircut and a shave.

Now, Rambo was an escaped POW. He was a prisoner of the North Vietnamese and was tortured relentlessly before escaping, so when the deputies tried to shave him with a straight razor, he flipped out and grabbed the razor and slashed a deputy that reached for his gun.

Thus began an odyssey of death and mayhem in the nearby mountains and eventually destroyed a good part of Madison.

CONCLUSION

Most of you are probably aware that a movie was made from this book. Because of this I need to make comparisons to the movie.

The Book

This was David Morrell's first book and for a first book it showed phenomenal presence. The book was a pleasure to read. Morrell used easy to understand language and the novel moved right along smoothly. It contains cover to cover action and there's never a dull moment, literally the story seemed to jump out at you.

The macho macho plot seems to revolve around saving some perceived face. Teasle thinks if he backs down he would be setting a precedent and his little town would soon be inundated with drugs and undesirables, a ridiculous notion. On the other hand Rambo probably could have avoided confrontation if he'd have been forthcoming about his service, status and his medal. Instead he was close lipped and brought the confrontation to a head. At first you seem to pull for Rambo as being unjustly persecuted but ultimately he proves to be an out of control trained killer who is in a preservation mode - exactly as he was trained.

The Movie

In short the book was excellent but it was much more violent than the movie, which I'd seen first, so I felt it was much more violent than it needed to be. For example in the movie only one deputy gets killed almost accidentally and the viewer felt he deserved it.

In the book, Rambo was determined to kill everyone who came after him including the bloodhounds and he was good at his job. In the movie Rambo was not quite as psychotic and because of this you empathized with him as the underdog. I guess I feel that the book was great but honestly, I enjoyed the movie more.

First Blood is Heavy criticism on the Vietnam war

The novel "First Blood" by David Morrel may be wrongly interpreted as just an "action/adventure" thriller without a brain, but that's far from the truth. The book does contains some elements of the adventure genre, but it presents us with a much bigger vison of life than just that. It is about Intolerance and justice.
John Rambo, a vagant war veteran, is mistreated by a bunch of redneck cops in a small town in the US. Submitted to humiliation and torture, and being traumatized by the months (years?) he spent under torture by the vietnamese, the ex-green beret and war hero loses control, explodes in fury and hatred and fights back, starting a killing spree.
He hides in the woods, builds traps, he uses the elements of the nature against his pursuiters.
The climax hits when both him and his enemies are thrown in the woods, his element, were they have to play by his rules, and the animal within each one of them takes control.
Then, violence erupts.
The novel is very real and down-to-earth. It is quite different from the movie. It is not heroic at all. It is about being different and being thrown aside, it is about the indiference, hate and coldness that the United States gave to their war veterans. It is about intolerance and fear. It is about how the government destroyed the sanity of some kids to build killing machines out of them, and sent those killing machines to southeast Asia to a war they could not understand, didn't want to and, mainly, didn't HAVE to. To kill better.
It is about how, when those kids came back home confused and tortured by the atrocities they had seen/commited, their country threw them in the gutter, pretending that they weren't there. Disposable heroes.
It is not at all about madly killing faceless enemies, big guns and, explosions, and giant-brested babes waiting to be rescued. It is not about making toys and animated series for kids. It is about reality. Forget the movie adaptations, forget the distorted, pleasent and idiotic vison that Hollywood wants the world to have. The real thing is here. Read it.

Good textbook to rent.

Great information in the book. Got it in good condition as a rental and it got me through the course. As a student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University majoring in Aeronautics, I didn't appreciate the subjective and business oriented demeanor of the text. Additionally it seems like the authors were just to wordy and ended up over-complicating simple subjects. If you need this book for class, renting it (IMO) is the way to go.

This book does have not page numbers for the iPad app. If you have assigned reading or are told to refer to what ever page for an example, you cannot go to the page. Terrible feature.

The book arrived in excellent condition and shipping was fast! This text is not as good of a teaching aid as I would have hoped for. It's a required college text. Statistics course knowledge is necessary in order to understand all of the concepts in the later chapters.

This book is recommended for those who already have some prior knowledge of the pronunciation of Arabic accents (such as the Arabic accents: ayin, ghayn, ha, and khaf). For those of you who do not, this book does indeed provide some great, in-depth techniques on the pronunciation and recognition of these accents, that you will encounter throughout the program. These techniques have proven extremely beneficial for beginner students who were previously unfamiliar with these accent pronunciations. But keep in mind this isn’t a pronunciation book! Lebanese Arabic encompasses three slightly different dialects, the dialects of the north, south, and center of the country (Beirut). The one in this book is the Beirut dialect. In the Lebanese dialect, verb conjugation is irregular, and this book will not teach you those skills since this is not a grammar book. In most languages, including Classical Arabic, a conjugated verb is always followed by an infinitive verb, but this is not the case in the Lebanese colloquial dialect since every verb in the sentence must be conjugated. Keep in mind that Lebanese Arabic is not an official language, but rather is a colloquial dialect. The purpose of my method is solely to give you the tools to create your own sentences in order to become conversational, while in regards to grammar, pronunciation, etc., you are on your own!

People often dream about learning a foreign language, but never do. Whatever the reason is, it's time to set it aside and with my new method, you will have enough time and you will not fail. You will actually learn how to speak the fundamentals of the language, and speak the language fluently in as little as a few days. Of course you won't speak perfect Arabic at first, but you will certainly gain significant proficiency. For example, if you travel to the Lebanon or an Arabic Speaking country, you will almost effortlessly be able engage in basic 'fluent' communication with the locals, and you will no longer be intimidated with culture shock. It's time to relax. Learning a language is a valuable skill and a form of communication that connects people of multiple cultures around the world.

How does my method work? Well, I have taken twenty-seven of the most used languages and distilled out of them the 350 most commonly used words in any language. This whole process took three years of observation and research, and during that time I have determined which words I felt were most important for this method of basic 'fluent' communication. In that time, I chose these words in such a way that they are structurally interrelated, and when combined, they form sentences. Thus once you succeed in memorizing them, then you will be able to combine these words and form your own sentences. The words are spread over 20 pages.

The words will also correspond easily in sentences, for example, enabling you to be able to ask simple questions, Introduction to the Program etc. I have also created Memorization Made Easy techniques for this program in order to help with the memorization of the vocabulary (Page #13). Please also see page #15, in order to gain proficiency in the Reading and Pronunciation of the Arabic Language, prior to starting this program. My book is intended for basic 'first person' vocal communication, meaning anyone can easily use it to 'get by' linguistically while visiting a foreign country, without learning the entire language. You will be 100 percent understandable to native speakers, which is your aim. One disclaimer: this is NOT a grammar book, though it does address minute and essential grammar rules (but keep your eyes peeled for grammar footnotes at the bottom of every page of the program). Therefore, understanding complex sentences with obscure words in the language is outside the scope of this book.

People who have tried this method have been successful. In this program the Arabic Language is translated into Latin Alphabets (English Transliteration), so it is not a requirement to know the written form beforehand. By the time you finish this book, you will be almost entirely fluent and understandable in the Lebanese Arabic. This is the best basis to learn, not only the Arabic language but any language. Lebanese Arabic is a Levantine dialect. The term Levantine derives from "Levant" which is the geographical region of the Eastern Mediterranean which encompasses Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and the Hatay Province of Southern Turkey. Several languages are spoken in the Levant, one of which is Lebanese Arabic. Lebanese Arabic descends from the traditional Arabic language, though there are many variables that affected the language's development. Most Lebanese speak the language, and Arabic remains its written form, despite past attempts by some to make an alphabet system using Latin letters. Some people view Lebanese as merely a dialect of Arabic, while others accept the language as unique. Either way, the word connotations vary in both languages, as does its syntax and vocabulary. Lebanese Arabic uses minute Turkish and Aramaic vocabulary and a little French. In general keep in mind Lebanese Arabic is not an official language, but rather a colloquial dialect.

the best technique to learn the language fast.

I’ve always wanted to learn how to speak arabic, since all my close friends are arabs, so I always wanted to talk to them in Arabic and share in on the inside jokes. I’ve tried many courses and books but they all were traditional Arabic and every time I tried to talk to my friends, they would laugh at me and say that i’m speaking in classical written arabic.
Just a few weeks ago I borrowed this book from a friend of mine and it has been amazing, the technique is so easy to follow with parallel sentences and english and arabic words next to each other, I started understanding how Arabic is spoken!
I also showed it to my Lebanese friend who thought that the book was really impressive and focused more on the speaking part of it.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to speak and talk in Arabic. It is the best technique to learn the language fast.

While at first glance one might have reservations about such a radical idea, author Richard Salva painstakingly and exhaustively takes the reader on a spiritual adventure, comparing the lives of the president and the famous flyer, and makes a very strong, convincing argument in favor of his theory, in terms of life events, similar thought processes and reactions to life experiences, and even similarity of names. The theory behind the book was inspired by the words of yoga master Paramhansa Yogananda.

Point by point, Salva, an author and minister, brings up parallel scenes from the lives of Lincoln and Lindbergh. In a very convincing chapter, Salva compares the two great men's ladies: Lincoln's Ann Rutledge, who died before they could be married, and Lindbergh's Anne Morrow: each was a delicate beauty with dark hair and blue eyes, each petite at five foot-two, each woman twenty-two to the suitor's twenty-six. Salva discusses how the disappointment of Rutledge's death and the following, less-than-happy marriage to the emotionally unstable Mary Todd Lincoln, might have found its fulfilment in the happier, more stable marriage of Lindbergh and Anne Morrow.

Certainly the whole cycle of reincarnation as it applies to the rest of us is addressed in a brilliant way. Salva discusses how a soul may not necessarily incrementally improve in each lifetime, but may slip back a bit here and there, like a line on a 'reasonably successful business's financial chart.' He describes the life of Charles Lindbergh as 'Lincoln on vacation.' Fascinating glimpses of the spiritual lives of these men emerge, and the gift of the author is to make the reader feel as if he knows these great men intimately. At one point, the author offers a comparison of a quote of Lincoln's 'The world shall know that I keep my faith to my friends and enemies, come what will,' as a heartrending parallel to Lindbergh's refusal to use marked bills in order to keep faith with his son's kidnappers.

The author offers so many fascinating ideas and aspects of the two men's lives that the reader will probably want to continue investigating on his or her own. Salva has included a bibliography of source material just in case the reader chooses to do just that.

Even those who do not subscribe to the idea of reincarnation will find the book most rewarding for the extensive historical work that Salva has achieved. Eight years ago, I began to study the evidence that Lincoln and Lindbergh were the same soul. I pored over dozens of books in search of aspects of their lives and characters that might suggest the truth of Yogananda's statement, including signs of a past-life familiarity with the teachings of yoga. I studied old newspapers and magazines and visited sites where Lincoln and Lindbergh had lived, and I interviewed historians and experts.

What I discovered was simply amazing.

When I began this project, I didn't know what to expect. I thought perhaps I'd find a few interesting connections--but I found hundreds! Again and again, there were unmistakable connections: resemblances in their physical forms, thoughts, feelings, spiritual aspirations, friendships, and the circumstances and events of their lives. this book reads like it is fiction

This was an interesting book with an interesting concept of investigating historical evidence for reincarnation through comparative biography, a comparative biography of Lincoln and Lindbergh. Unfortunately, this book reads like it is fiction, as if using fictional anecdotes describing similarities between Lincoln and Lindbergh, because the author usually only paraphrased his biographical sources, seemingly simplifying his biographical sources, seldom directly quoted his biographical sources, evidently ignorantly afraid of copyright violations, and worse, seldom or almost never included any direct references or footnotes or end notes to indicate his exact sources for his anecdotes, although the author listed his source bibliography. Cannot be described as scholarly, but merely popular level writing.

I did not care at all for this book. There's too much speculation and the so called first person accounts appear to be made up, just to get into print. It's really unbelievable. I have read many books on the subject so I do have something to compare with. I couldn't finish it. I gave it to someone else and even they didn't like it.
