INTRODUCTION

BOTH AT WORK and at home, success and happiness depend on relating

to others across a chasm of significant differences. If you could figure out

how to bridge the gap between yourself and others, you could make your

life—and theirs—much easier, happier, and more productive. How to do

that is what this book is about.

The differences between people are a major source of friction. For example,

our friend Michelle does everything in a rush. She walks fast,

talks fast, decides fast. And she completes projects in a flurry. As luck

would have it, she’s often teamed with John, who is very deliberate.

John walks slowly, talks slowly, decides slowly. Although these differences

may not seem like a big deal, if they’re not managed well they’re

likely to erode Michelle’s and John’s working relationship. You’ve undoubtedly

seen how differences like these can undermine cooperation,

hamper performance, and add considerable stress to people’s lives.

This book shows how you can manage those kinds of differences in

ways that enhance your relationships, increase your productivity, and add

richness and spice to your life. It’s about making people differences work

for, rather than against, you.

There are three parts to the book:

• Part One: Understanding Yourself and Others

• Part Two: Style Flex: A Key to Improved Relationships

• Part Three: People Styles and Family Relationships

Part One: Understanding Yourself and Others provides a pragmatic

way of understanding the differences between people. Rather than delve

into esoteric psychological theory, it provides a straightforward, practical

explanation of what you need to know to relate more effectively to others.

Chapter 1 notes some of the differences between the four people styles

and how those differences can lead to people problems. Chapter 2 describes

the people styles model and explains how it can help you relate

more effectively to people very different from yourself. Chapter 3 helps

you capture data for identifying your own style. The two dimensions of

behavior that are key to understanding yourself and others are highlighted

in Chapter 4. With this background, Chapter 5 guides you

through an assessment that shows how you come across to other people.

The four people styles are described in Chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 8 depicts

each style’s tendency toward certain strengths and weaknesses.

Chapter 9 describes backup styles—the four dysfunctional and relationship-

straining ways in which people of each style react to excessive stress.

In Chapter 10, you’ll learn how to cope productively both with your own

and with other people’s stressed-out behavior.

Part Two: Style Flex: A Key to Improved Relationships shows how to

create more productive interactions by applying the knowledge of yourself

and others gained in Part One. Chapter 11 introduces you to style

flex, a way of creating common ground with people very different from

yourself. Style flex is the intriguing ability to be true to yourself while

relating to someone else on that person’s wavelength. The four steps involved

in flexing to another person’s style are presented in Chapter 12. In

Chapter 13, you learn how to identify another person’s style. Chapter 14

describes how to use style flex in several special situations. The final chapter

of Part Two describes basic flex—three personal qualities that undergird

style flex.

Parts One and Two are equally applicable to personal and work relationships.

However, the people styles model has some unique and beneficial

applications to personal relationships. So Part Three: People Styles

and Family Relationships discusses applications of the people styles model

to two of these types of personal relationships. Chapter 16, ‘‘The Art of

Loving Someone Very Different from Yourself,’’ shows how to forge an

even better relationship with your domestic partner. In Chapter 17, you’ll

find style-based parenting guidelines that will help you have more enjoyable

relationships with your kids while helping them increase their selfesteem

and develop their unique strengths.

There are four appendices—one for each of the four styles. The appendix

for your style presents specific guidelines on how to flex to persons

of each of the four styles.

Many of the concepts in this book will come not as news but as

reminders. We’re often told that this way of organizing interpersonal data

helps people sharpen insights they’ve already gained from their life experience.

This familiarity makes it easier for readers to implement the relationship-

enhancing methods found in these pages.

Vital Information for anyone

I read the first edition, this book has information in it that I have not seen in other personality style books. I knew much of the typing of styles but now knowing the Back-up response styles and secondary Back-up styles is vital to dealing with difficult and all people. Now I know how and why they react to my personality type and why they may not be comfortable with what I am saying to them, by noticing their actions and response back-up style.
In sales you often wonder Why people reject you or your product but now I have a clear understanding of how to gain committments from those difficult personalties I used to struggle with because I didn't know they didn't deal well with a certain style I was using.
I also manage an office and I might just send everyone home one day and make them read this book, so they would never again say, "Why does he or she respond that way, when I share my ideas?" Once you begin to understand why people do what they do, you can move so much farther in building stronger relationships. You are no longer surprised by their response or actions and you can change your language and actions to fit their style, knowing how they respond to what is best for them. I had my associates all read this and they finally found out why they were struggling to work with certain people and now they have typed everyone and they have learned how to respect others style.
In sales, you don't worry about clients that don't budge who are amiable or analytical because now you can learn what they want and how they like to be sold. you provide it at the outset vs. many lost sales because they didn't see it my way, however, my way is always the same way. I have finally learned why they act the way they do in response to my sales approach and so now I tailor everything to avoid those issues.
I go back to this book for ideas more than any book I have ever needed for work. It's invaluable.

this book is a handy way to learn what it takes to get along, not only at work but at home. once you understand the styles, and the authors make that plenty easy, it becomes quite a snap to prepare and practise effective communication.

The use of the book is highly dependent on the ability to profile people.Often the physical behaviour of the person you need to profile is not easily visible and some times contradictory, in the sense that a person may show behaviour which would be both equally assertive and not assertive.

it is well organized and easy to understand

While this book does include everything it advertises: makeup looks, hair dos, nail art, and explanation of what certain tools are for, the techniques taught are the very basic of them. This book is for the very beginners who are getting in makeup and hair. Everything on the book is something that you can find a video for in youtube, without having to read the book. However, it is well organized and easy to understand, so if you are a beginner it is a good choice for you. I recommend this book for beauty beginners and for those who are fans of Lauren Conrad and want to get her signature look.

This is a great beauty how to book. As a fan of Lauren's and an avid blog reader, I was happy to finally get this book. She really seems to go over all the basis of beauty, and what can be defined as making you feel better about yourself. Eating properly and taking care of your skin. But what really makes it interesting is how she tips out how to apply makeup. Covering those pesky spots. How to take care of your hair and nails. She is also willing to show off some mistakes she had made at an early age with beauty. If you're looking for a book to help you get better with all of those things, this is the one for you.

I ordered this book for a quick read and to see someone else's perspective of hair and makeup. It was a quick and easy read. This book is better for someone who really doesn't know much about hair and makeup and wants to learn the basics. It's a pretty book that I display in my room as well.

Unique twist for me. A very good beginning to a new series.

Dr. Megan Chase is a counseling psychologist and has a new radio call-in show. Though Megan hates the show's motto, her boss insists Megan begin each call by stating that she will slay their personal demons. But her clients are not the only ones that seem to believe the motto, so do the personal demons. Although Megan does not know it at first, she is the only human without a personal demon on her shoulder, whispering in her ear. This fact, coupled with her being psychic, makes her the target of an army of tiny personal demons and of a soul-sucker known as The Accuser.

Enter the fire demon called Greyson "Grey" Dante. He represents a demon family that want to use Megan as a way to gain more power. Grey becomes her most powerful ally against the creatures, including zombies and vampires, out to kill her. Grey has three demon bodyguards (named Malleus, Maleficarum, and Spud) constantly at her side, as well as a witch named Tera teaching her how to focus her psychic abilities. To top it all off, Megan's boss has a tabloid reporter, Brian Stone, writing an article about "Dr. Demon Slayer", who has been digging into Megan's past and finding things she does not want to talk about.

***** I found this story to have a unique twist on the over done subjects of demons and psychics. If there are other stories out there like this one, I've never read it. A fanciful walk on the creepy and dark side that will keep you up reading long into the night. A great beginning to a new series. *****

Hated the characters too much to continue reading

First of all, I LOVED the Downside Ghosts series by the same author, which is why I started reading this book.

This book is NOTHING like the Downside Ghosts series, and I could only get through about 1/3 of it before I finally just put it down for good. It's not very well-written, but more importantly, I HATE all of the characters.

The main character is a born victim. By the time I put it down, about 4 different men (that she barely knew) had grabbed her arm so hard it hurt and all she could say was "You're hurting me." Everyone is angry at her, but I'm not sure why. She doesn't seem to either, but apologizes anyway. People walk into her house and she wonders vaguely who they are and wishes they would leave. People say the most terrible things to her, and she thinks about how hurt and upset she is that they're saying them. She has no redeeming qualities, and she's the heroine of the story! I like flaws (her Downside heroine is a drug addict & liar... but at least she's likeable, sharp, funny, and you're pulling for her), but this was just too much. I couldn't suspend disbelief enough for her to be believable (and I was totally willing to go with the whole demon angle).

She was so passive that I just couldn't take it anymore and had to put it down. That combined with the utterly ridiculous plotline that demons have misunderstood that the show's tagline is just that... a tagline. And that she's NOT an actual demon slayer. I knew about this plot before I read the book, obviously, and I assumed there would be some humor in regards to it or that it would be better explained why the demons are that stupid. But no. Are we to believe they take EVERYTHING literally and they they're also gunning for Sarah Michelle Geller because she played Buffy?

I don't understand how this book got so many good reviews. I love PNR. I usually love anything paranormal. I love Urban Fantasy, sci-fi, you name it. But not this. I highly recommend the author's other series as well as the Darkfever series by Moning.

Devilishly Delighful Urban Fantasy

Personal Demons is a supersexy urban fantasy, some might say paranormal romance, but like all good demon fiction, the sin of lust takes precedence over anything as wholesome as that other L word. Megan Chase, psychic therapist (though the psychic part is a secret), is up to her ears in crazy clients, radio station politics and zombies! After a near fatal attack, she's let in on a little secret: those personal demons she claims to slay on her radio talk show? Um..a wee bit miffed. It seems she's been marked for death, which is really bad timing because she's being tailed by a reporter hot for a story and a demon hot for some tail. To make things right, Megan must do battle with the spawn of Satan (both in and out of the bedroom) and the skeletons in her own closet.

Kane serves up a malevolently entertaining entry into the urban fantasy genre, the action is fierce and the sex is scorching, her characters are well drawn--Megan, in particular, is so engaging you'll be missing her from the second you turn that final page--and the story clips along with the urgency of a freeway car chase.

Highly recommended!

The best 800 protocol ever..saved my life this book!

I have been following the protocol from this book and have now lost 80lbs by following it to a T. Something I never thought possible in my life. I am an emotional eater, and chose poor choices at the grocery store. In fact 6-7 times a week it was fast food. After getting on this protocol, and seeing results leave my body rapidly but safely, I realized just how effective it was to eat clean, and still enjoy life. I was never deprived, never sick, and full of energy. I even slept great for the first time in years. I am so close to goal now because I followed this book, and have always stabilized between rounds. This book has everything you need to maximize your weightloss safely. They have good recipes in there for us, a grocery list, suppliments list, sample menus and even places to go for actual support. I know that I was on a road to destruction in my life. This books saved me from my destructive self. This is a tool for life, and I will never have an excuse again to yo yo up and down or ever worry about myself getting into an unhealthy BMI. My doctor is absolutely amazed at what I have done, thank you Sonia E. Russell for providing such an amazing tool to get people healthy. This clinically studied diet, has helped alot of people. I have seen the journey's and transformations, and they are just jaw dropping!

Meh...It Has a Few Good Ideas However I'm Disappointed

I wish I could give this book 5-stars and say it is the most definitive HCG book ever. But I can't.
I've done the HCG diet before and I find it a difficult and excellent way to lose fat while preserving one's muscle mass. My beef with the 500 calorie HCG diet is I think for many people too little protein is ingested to protect their lean muscle mass.

The good things about this book are:
1. You can eat more than 500 calories on HCG.
2. A discussion on green vegetables and water vegetables and what to consume.
3, Clearer guidance on the phases and what foods to eat.
4. A nice list of recipes and what phases to consume these recipes on.
5. Advising people to take anti-candida medicine to reduce candida while doing the HCG diet.

The book "Pounds and Inches" is free allover the net and it is flawed but also adequate to help a person succeed on HCG. A better HCG diet book is needed and this book addresses some holes however it falls short. My advice for HCG dieters is as follows:
*Don't eat the cracker it will slow your weight loss down.
*If you go over 500 calories, eat more protein. Me, I buy egg white protein and make shakes. Hard boiled eggs are good to. Eat the whites and throw away the yolks except perhaps a 1/2 a yolk a day.
*Go with apples or strawberries. Some people do oranges and grapefruit. Blueberries were a stall creator for me. Don't get fancy here with fruit.
*Do the 50 day maintenance phase keeping you body weight stable or....DON'T bother doing this diet. Do this and you'll keep the weight off. Ignore or short-change this phase and you'll undo all your hard work.
*Do a food/energy/emotions/poop journal. This will help you see the relationship between between how food makes you feel. Do this right and it will open your eyes. Emotions are often the root cause behind weight. Understand the emotions that cause binge eating and then find better ways to deal with those emotions. Chocolate cake will make your mouth feel good for about 5min but feeling poorly the next several hours.

It is an OK book. Perhaps I'll warm up to it if I like the recipes. If so I'll update my review if this happens.

This helped me lose 120+ lbs ...

After having 3 children, I, like many others, found myself well over 200 lbs. I started the hcg diet and only had Dr. Simeons original manuscript to follow. Finding this protocol has completely changed my perceptions on food. Not only did I lose more with the 800 than the 500 protocol, but it helped me to not lose hair (like I did on the 500) and stick with the protocol long enough to reach goal weight. Not only was I able to lose the weight, but I have kept it off because of Sonia's focus on real foods and no artificial "replacements" for my poor food habits. Not only have my eating habits changed, but so have the eating habits of my whole family. I am happy to say that I've kept the weight off for nearly a year and my children also focus on if something they are eating is "healthy" or not. :-)

bought cos I trust Deepak Chopra - so far think it's very good, and the cd's are easy to listen to, take it a bit at a time.. slowly get better - it's a new process for me so wanted to try expert.

Cleared Fatigue in less than one month!!! Wonderful set of cds!

I was absolutely amazed how quickly the fatique I was feeling turned around after using these techniques. Not only do I have more energy, but I am also dropping weight and eating better. I have more energy to exercise and have been finding that I can get through the day without a nap anymore and have much energy to spare. I really enjoyed the cds. I have used some of the techniques and others I have chosen not to use, but I still am acheiving great results. I also enjoyed listening to Chopra's voice. It has a very soothing, relaxing appeal. He has a charming accent and a nice demeanor. Thanks so much for creating the program, I'm sure it will change my life!!!
