Great Introduction to Supply Chain Management

As a consultant in this area, I have recommended this book to my clients. This well-structured, easy-to-read book is an excellent introduction to concepts of Supply Chain Management. Its target audience, executives who must learn about supply chain in order to make strategic decisions, could be expanded to include any person who wants or needs to learn about supply chain. I highly recommend it as a first book for any project manager who is new to this are.
The book contains 8 chapters, each with a similar structure: a list of the learning and performance objectives of preceding the actual content, which is presented in a logical and interesting way. The content is accompanied by helpful diagrams and a series of examples or case studies labeled "Executive Insight" or "In the Real World". It also contains lists of helpful "Tips and Techniques".
The author begins with an overview of the general concepts of Supply Chain Management. One of the objectives of this chapter is to be able to "Start an intelligent conversation about supply chain management issues in your company" It is a tall order, and the author succeeds, introducing the neophyte to the basic concepts of Production, Inventory, Location, Transportation and Inventory with clear and concise prose. In a very interesting example, Hugos uses the story of Alexander the Great to illustrate how a good supply chain functions.
The following 4 chapters systematically cover the basics of supply chain: Planning and Sourcing, Making and Delivering, Coordination and Technology and Supply Chain Metrics. Each of these chapters takes up the fundamental concepts involved and explains them in a simple and understandable fashion. For those that are reading this book as an introduction to supply chain, there will be many an "aha"of understanding as you read along. Of particular interest for the IT project manager, Hugos explains at length what the various technologies are that serve the supply chain.
In the final 2 chapters the author assists the reader in analyzing the type of market(s) that their company targets, and how to determine and plan for a supply chain to succesfully serve them. As well, the chapter includes a number of usefel tools and techniques that can be used to plan out a supply chain project. Most project managers should find this section to be very useful. He closes the book with a look to the future, and uses the concept of "Emergent Behavior" to make predictions about supply chains of the future. He explains how supply chains will develop "Self Adjusting Feedback Loops", using automation to keep information constantly flowing around the loop.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Supply Chain Management. It will be helpful in particular to project managers and IT professionals who want to work in the manufacturing sector. It is well thought out and eminently readable!

A practioner's perspective

I have been managing complex supply chains for the aerospace industry for at least a couple of decades and have installed collaborative supply chain applications at several airlines and OEMs. I find "Essentials of Supply Chain Management" a refreshing, easy, and informative read for the practitioner. Having recently gone through several text books written by academicians I find that even the best of them lacked the touch and the feel of real life supply chain issues. Most hands on managers however need to know the latest technologies and best business practices that might help them solve real life problems. Michael Hugo's book comes close to achieving that goal. The simulation model at [...] works hand in hand with the book. It allows paractioners the opportunity to put to test some of the concepts described in the book. The book and the simulation model can but does not have to be used concurrently to help managers formulate and test assumptions relevant to their own operation. With customer experience at the top of SCM manager's agenda these days, this book shines a light on a road not strictly dedicated to the theory of constraints with a single minded focus on maximizing throughput. The Best Book in Its Class!

When I stumbled across the book "Make Difficult People Disappear", I was hoping it was a "how-to" manual, but alas, it was not to be. I've read many books in this genre, but none has so grabbed my attention, so fast! The Authors' style draws one right into the story in a way few books do. As you read of Cybil's journey, you begin a slow, but impactful series of Ah-ha moments. The way Ms. Wofford skillfully guides the reader to the key points while using humor and just plain old fun, makes this a joy to read. I get the feel from the way this is written, that it is a message the author passionately believes. I have now read this book through twice. I've given away my copy and am buying at least a dozen more to give to those I know, that will appreciate and benefit from this book. If you haven't guessed by now, I have a very strong opinion about this work. I see it ending up in the "Think and Grow Rich" category of classic "change your thinking" style of books. I strongly recommend this book, especially if most of the people in your life are indeed difficult and you would like them to disappear.

Great book on working with people

She accomplishes this with a delightful fictional story that teaches us how to deal with difficult people. Great Clues for Better Relationships Abound in This Book

About Monica's new book: The story really hits the mark in terms of achieving a way to communicate the value of what you (aka the trainer) do for people in organizations. I learned to care about the characters as I read through it. I especially wanted to know if Cybil could shift and how, especially given that her husband is a Relater. Monica's narrative took me through that journey and delivered a satisfying and believable ending.

I'm predominantly a Relater (other categories tied with 3 checkmarks each in the easy-to-complete test), which is another reason the book resonated with me. I found it to be a truly enjoyable experience in giving words to human behavior and practical clues for better relationships.

Clear, well-written, fun to read, insightfully valuable.

William O'Neil Shows the Way to Gain Wealth Systematically

William O'Neil the author has just published his magnum opus and its a wonderful book to show the small investor how to attain wealth in an effective and systematic fashion.

This book is a guide to understand how the Stock Market really works. William O'Neil perfected his CAN-SLIM method in the 1960's to make himself a multi-millionaire. He felt that his investment system was something most people could learn so he launched a newspaper in 1984 called Investment Business Daily (IBD) to teach small investors how to invest well and increase their net worth significantly.

During the go-go Bull market years of the 1990's IBD reached a subscription level of over 300,000 subscribers and competed head-on the the venerable and established Wall Street Journal (WSJ). I am convinced IBD is the superior newspaper because it specifically teaches the small investor how to outperform Mutual Funds by using the small investor's main advantage - the ability to get in and out of the market quickly. This advantage when properly used allows the small investor to avoid the major damage of a huge Bear market downturn such as in the case of 2001-2002 and also in 2008. Mutual Funds being so heavily invested with billions of dollars of stocks are not so nimble; consequently they usually take heavy losses during large market downturns such as in 2008.

His system is called CAN-SLIM. It is a complex set of rules; so allow yourself two years to learn the basics. You will have to master the reading of technical charts and understand fundamentals of various companies. You need to understand concepts such as Sales, Earnings, Return on Equity (ROE) , how Mutual Funds operate, accumulations, distributions, relative price strength (RPS), cups and handles, breakouts, 50-day moving averages, base failures, puts, calls, pivot points, double bottoms, growth stocks vs value stocks, accumulation days etc. Understanding these concepts is not for the faint hearted; there is a lot to learn.

O'Neil will show you the way with his book. Unfortunately the rules are very, very counter-intuitive and contrary to so called "conventional investment wisdom" and what most investment pundits advise. It will probably go against everything you have been taught in life. That is why most people have difficulty applying CAN-SLIM methods because it is so counter-intuitive. For example: What really works well is to buy high and sell higher. We are conditioned to buy low and sell high. This latter approach is not effective in the stock market but most people buy in the "conventional wisdom" manner and in many cases get clobbered. 98 % of individual investors buy stocks this way and it is not effective. You also need to know when the Bear Market is coming so you can exit and go to cash for safety. IBD provides the early warning indicators when the Bear is near.

There is much to learn in order to win against the Stock Market and how it really works. But it can be done ! To do so you need to be a hard worker and be able to learn from your mistakes. Learning CAN-SLIM is similar to learning upper-level math courses such as statistics. There are no royal roads or shortcuts in learning and applying CAN-SLIM rules. It is not an easy subject to learn. You should also have access to the Enhanced Daily Graphs to see both the Fundamental and Technical Analysis displayed on one page. You will need these tools to win this financial war; these tools provide the key financial intelligence to let you know what is really occurring in the world of the stock market.

I also recommend you keeping notes in a journal of some type. This will help you to learn the skills needed. You must also develop a skill in reading the charts to understand the psychology of what is happening in the market place. There are about 100 charts of past winners to study which provide the guide for picking future stock winners if you are able to recognize the patterns. If you can read the past history well you can predict the future. It will appear like you are looking at Latin and Greek symbols at first and will seem unintelligible for awhile but after much practice you will readily start seeing patterns. These patterns provide the entry and exits points for effective stock buys.

Why is learning this method so hard ? Here are some of the key CAN-SLIM rules that must be mastered if you do not want to financially hurt by the Stock Market:

1) Buy stocks above $ 20 per share at the optimum pivot point in a buying surge during a strong Bull Market and sell at a higher price.
2) Always cut your losses at 7 - 8 % when buying.(Most important rule).
3) If initially successful; pyramid your buying up.
4) Stay in cash during a Bear Market.
5) Never argue with the Stock Market; it is always right.
6) Concentrate your stock buying and watch your stocks closely.
7) Do not over diversify.
8) Read the investment classics by Jesse Livermore, Gerald Loeb, Benard Baruch and Nicolas Darvas. They are the pioneers in this field and the teachers that William O'Neil discovered after reviewing over 2000 stock investment books in the early 1960's. Only few authors such as Jesse Livermore and Gerald Loeb were deemed worthwhile. William O'Neil learned their methods, added some of his findings and crafted their wisdom into a complete and effective but complicated system called CAN-SLIM.
9) Keep your ego in check. Stay objective. Don't celebrate too much when you win; Don't get depressed when you get losses.
10) Keep your gains big & Keep your losses small.
11) Buy high and sell higher (very counter-intuitive !)
12) High diversification of stocks ensures mediocrity; Concentration in the right stocks leads to large gains.
13) Yearly gains of 20 - 100 % are possible in strong Bull markets while in Bear Markets your capital is preserved.

I have also subscribed to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) for twenty (20) years. But the WSJ does not provide the information that is in IBD. IBD is unique and is an investment education conduit for people who are active learners and who wish to increase their net worth significantly.

The WSJ has some good in-depth articles on business news but doesn't inform the small investor when to be in or out the market or how to pick the best growth stock leaders. This is the gap which IBD fills ! I am convinced IBD is by far the more valuable newspaper for the small investor.

Effective use of the IBD tools is like a financial light sabre that will allow you to make significant financial gains especially in the first year of a strong Bull Market.

These methods are for those who do not mind hard work. You must be able to learn from your mistakes and be tenacious in learning the complexities of the Stock Market. If you are looking for an easy way to make significant money you need to look elsewhere. You will not be happy trying to learn very complex and counter-intuitive concepts. If do you pursue this study; it will probably take you at least 2 years to learn CANSLIM well. It is an art as well as a science.

What about actual results ? I am a Chief Engineer in Aerospace and the skills and knowledge I have picked up in the last 5 years with O'Neil's system has added about $100,000 each year to my savings since 2006. The time I spend on it each week is about 3 to 4 hours so it is like having a second job. I have not quit my day job but with the extra savings I have more peace of mind and with three children to send thru college in the near future I am confident I will be able to do so. In short - I may not be on easy street yet but I feel like I am out of the salt mines. This CANSLIM approach has worked well for me and I hope to improve my skills in it by continued study. I plan to get better at this. This system does work well.

The CANSLIM stock investing methodology outlined in "How to Make Money in Stocks" is a time tested method that incorporates how the equity (stock) market(s) really work - for the passive, minority, outside investor. It is a 80/20 approach (with William O'Neil's approach, proprietary metrics and tools you can achieve 80% of the success with 20% of the effort) and explicitly rides the coattails of the market (read and react - don't fight/argue with the market). This system *IS* designed for the individual investor and small professional investor - I'm not sure it would scale for $250 million portfolios and above (but I'm not sure that it wouldn't either).

CANSLIM is part fundamental (here earnings growth is the primary focus), part structural, part timing/technical and part money/risk management (this part is **crucial** to investment success). The vast amount of other investing books will typically provide only a screening/selection approach, but "How to Make Money in Stocks" provides a comprehensive investment approach including stock selection, portfolio composition, selling criteria and money/risk management.

In short - buy stocks that have a reason to go up (a new product/management catalyst, a leading stock in one of the top 20% of the 196 IBD industry groups, strong earnings growth (>25%), solid Return on Equity (> 17%), reasonable leverage, etc.) when the stock is poised to breakout (strong and increasing institutional shareholder support, has outperformed at least 80% of the market over the previous 52 weeks, the stock is consolidating after a price run-up and breaks-out on trading volume that is significantly higher than the average trading volume over the last 50 days, etc.) and finally - and this is important - scale into your positions, pyramid up in the first 5% or price appreciation and cut you losses when the stock moves against you at 7-8% from your purchase price - NO QUESTIONS/NO EXCUSES/NO RATIONALIZATION.

Check out the independent and unbiased American Association of Individual Investors (AAII Dot Com) - they have tracked the monthly performance of 56 stock screens since January 1998 (now 11+ years) and the CANSLIM screen is consistently in the top 3 screens with a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) over that time in excess of 25%. While the AAII "recipe" for CANSLIM (and other screens for that matter)is a simplified approach and does not implement a strict constructionist approach (and contains buy rules only - no sell rules, just monthly re-screening - and no money/risk management techniques), it is an OUTSTANDING educational tool to learn about the pros and cons of the various stock screens and provides a starting point for anyone considering CANSLIM for their portfolios.

I personally have used CANSLIM with tremendous success since the late 1980s and participate in our local Meetup (AAII-atlanta Dot Com) where we utilize the CANSLIM approach. While most people assume this approach generates outstanding returns in the go-go bull markets (and it does), it really earns its keep in the down markets by utilizing the 7-8% stop loss on a stock by stock basis as part of a concentrated portfolio. It was a financial life safer in 1999/2000 and again in 2008/2009. Value investors (mutual funds), by contrast, were obliterated in 2008 - down some 50-60%! If that great "margin of safety" doesn't pay off in that environment - when does it?!

This growth/momentum approach differs substantially from a valuation driven approach (e.g., the Morningstar 5-star system based Morningstar's estimate of "fair value" of the stock compared to its current stock price). But if you trade based only on your (or a 3rd-party's) estimate of fair value, be prepared for some roller-coaster rides. In fact, check out Morningstar's own performance of their 5-star ranking system for the 2,000+ stocks that they cover and for their tortoise and hare portfolio - it pales in comparison to CANSLIM. The valuation only approach is for full-time professionals only - and even then - only the best of the best have been able to produce reasonable returns over time. Like the choice embedded in the title of Ned Davis's book "Being Right or Making Money", CANSLIM allows you to make money, while the purist value investors will argue about "being right" with *their8 discounted cash flow calculations (if only the market marched to that tune).

And finally, yes, the book discusses the Investors Business Daily (IBD) newspaper (and of course, CANSLIM) as the IBD newspaper and associated website (Investors Dot Com) have the tools to easily implement the CANSLIM methodology (SmartSelect(TM) ratings and other proprietary metrics). And William O'Neil is not just another financial author - he is a very successful investor, entrepreneur and financial data services provider.

I wholeheartedly endorse this book and methodology - and recommend it to EVERYONE who is considering investing directly in common stocks. Even if they pursue another style of investing, there are many excellent lessons to embrace from "How to Make Money in Stocks".

Bill O'Neil is one of Wall Street's most famous investors, mostly because he founded Investor's Business Daily. In this book he outlines his trading system, called "CANSLIM," and details how he has used it for years to capture enormous moves in the stock market from stocks that are about to take off and become the next big thing. To give you an idea of the kind of stocks O'Neil prides himself on finding, his past hits include Microsoft, Home Depot, and Amazon.

O'Neil's strategy is based on both technical and fundamental analysis, though the technical aspect receives much more space in the book. In fact technical analysis (meaning the reading of charts, volume, oscillators, etc) is so essential in O'Neil's investing that he recommends not buying a stock with a bad chart, regardless of how good the fundamentals may be. The first section of the book details the points of fundamental analysis (again, he uses the acronym CANSLIM)-earnings growth, industry leadership, and market direction among others. The next section deals with technicals and charting, and the last section offers some general advice and a look at successful investors of the past.

The methodology here is sound. When you buy stocks with the solid fundamentals O'Neil demands (which are not easy to come by) you get stocks with enormous growth potential. These are often the industry's next super-stocks, and he tries to get in them right before they take off. Because of this you can safely buy a stock with a high P/E multiple (which many fundamentalists recommend against) or one that just broke its 52 week high, and you can do this because the underlying fundamentals of the company are so incredibly strong as to ensure further momentum. Reading the chart ensures that the stock has a good base and won't have a nasty drop-off-a-cliff selloff at the first sign of a temporary sputter. O'Neil limits his losses to about 7% regardless of how good the stock is, and the idea is that your 7% losers will be more than made up for by your 25% (though sometimes many times more than that) winners.

As much as I like O'Neil's theory I was a little disappointed with the book. First, very little time is spent on the fundamental aspects of the stock. Because so much is devoted to charting, I wonder if many people would disregard the fundamentals altogether out of laziness, and instead go straight for the charts. Charting is great, but amateur chartists have a tendency to see whatever pattern they've convinced themselves will be there. I'm also put off by the constant self-touting, though I suppose I understand it. In reality this book is intended to steer people into the IBD way of investing, and get them to subscribe to the paper and/or website. The seemingly endless stream of testimonials (of almost infomercial proportion) at the end are kind of annoying as well. O'Neil's methodology is very sound and obviously proven-why he should have to cheapen it by such blatant marketing is puzzling to me. Keep in mind, also, that his system (as he himself points out) was designed for bull markets. In fact he recommends that you either stay completely out of bear markets or limit your exposure to them. The subtitle "A Winning System in Good Times or Bad" is therefore probably a bit misleading. Overall, however, this is a worthwhile book, and it is really the place to go to learn about the IBD methodology.

Amazon.com: My seven-year-old inspects the food on his plate like a hawk (if there was a hawk that only ate bagels and macaroni). Anything with the least bit of color goes untouched. What's a mom or dad to do?

Seinfeld: Two of my three children were exactly the same way. The vegetables, which I worked hard to prepare, not only went untouched, they were often insulted ("Eeewww...!"). And the harder I pushed them to eat good food, the harder they pushed back. We were literally ruining each other's meals.

That conflict was the inspiration for the book. I realized I wasn't going to win the power struggle, so I decided to join them on their turf. I started with the foods they would eat (chicken nuggets, tacos, macaroni and cheese) and I added a pureed vegetable of the same color. So if your child only eats macaroni and cheese (or noodles and butter), you should add cauliflower or yellow squash puree, which utterly disappears. Everyone wins: they get the nutrition they need and you get the satisfaction of doing a better job as a parent.

Seinfeld: First and foremost, remember that not every meal you prepare for a child will be a success. Kids at this age are naturally testing preferences, pushing boundaries, and changing their minds. That's part of their development and those are urges not worth battling. As I learned the hard way, the more pressure you apply, the more kids will "hate" certain foods. And, while it would be nice if kids had a "spirit of adventure" when it comes to food, I've found it's best to eliminate adventure and stick to the basics--foods they already love, laden with added nutrition they don't know is there. Finally, be consistent, firm and patient. I have a rule in my house: you don't have to eat what's on the plate, but what's on the plate is all that's being served. Eventually, they come around.

Amazon.com: Are your kids interested in cooking yet? Are there ways to introduce healthy eating habits with the child helping in the kitchen?

Seinfeld: My children are interested in baking because they love any excuse to be around sweets. But I make sure whatever we bake has pureed veggies in it and is actually low in refined sugar. So my children actually think baking cakes, brownies, and cookies with sweet potatoes, carrots, or beets is the proper way to cook.

Seinfeld: Every recipe in this book is a favorite. I've tried out countless creations on my kids, and if they didn't love them (which happened frequently!), they didn't make it into the book. But, if pressed, I will say they are crazy about the tacos, the chicken nuggets, the brownies, the pancakes, and my birthday cakes. Amazon.com: I have to ask it, since I know many readers will: do these recipes require a squad of personal chefs to prepare, or can a busy mom or dad without seven years of Seinfeld residuals put them together by themselves?

Seinfeld: I'm a busy mom with three kids, a job, and a husband who travels constantly, but I'm uncompromising when it comes to my kids' health and nutrition. Leaving that to someone else is out of the question. My parents had three kids and both worked too, and we always managed to eat healthy meals as a family. That's the standard I've always wanted to meet. So when I started creating recipes from my pureed veggie experiments, I had three criteria: my kids had to love the food, the preparation had to be quick, and the process had to be simple. Believe me, if I can do these recipes quickly and easily, ANYONE can.

Seinfeld: My daughter is almost seven and she not only can read, she's fully aware that her mother cooks with vegetables all the time. Two years ago, she was a picky four-year-old who thought she hated vegetables. But once she was converted and started seeing those purees going into the desserts she loves, she started to ignore the fact that they were going into the rest of her foods as well. Now it's the only kind of cooking she knows. So, to anyone with young children--start cooking Deceptively Delicious food when they are young! It's much easier than trying to change habits later on.

This book is the BEST!!!

Well let me begin by saying that I am not a professional chef, nor I am an uber-fan of the "Seinfeld" show - so I could care less who the author is. I also had a feeling that anything that deals with food and children and not being 100% honest with kids in this "kid-centered" world we live in would push a few buttons. And it did! I am a married mom of two boys and I am also interested in better health for my family. I do believe in eating fruits and vegetables in their natural state but let's be honest: Who among us eats five servings a day? I saw Ms. Seinfeld on Oprah and thought to myself, Well I have beeing doing the puree thing myself so let's see what she has to say. How are thre recipes? Pretty good, as a matter of fact. Here is what I did to try some of the recipes out:
First, I plugged my Bob Seger CD and got the ball rolling. The Beatles work just as well, the decision is yours. Then I washed my hands, put on my "Lutheran Jello Power" apron and said to myself: "It's Go Time!" I own a Vita-Mix blender which double as a food processor. I own a rice cooker which can be used to stream veggies. If you do not own a food processor or a steamer, do not despair. You can bake a lot of the veggies or put a colander in a shallow pan of boiling water to steam them. You can always invest in a steamer and/or food processor if you want, later. The first recipe I tries was:
CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES: 5 star.They are delicious! The only tweaking I did to the recipe was I pureed the chickpeas before adding them to the batter. I also used brown sugar Splenda rather than regular brown sugar; when done you have a batch of cookies that have 1/2 cup of brown sugar plus protein in them!! There is no white sugar in this recipe and I also used whole wheat flour. Excellent!! I have actually made these twice in a week.
SPAGETTI AND MEATBALLS: 5 stars. My kids are not that into meatballs and they ate them. This was my first attempt at meatballs, ever, and they turned out great. I put the broccoli puree and the sweet potato puree in the spagetti sauce and no one tasted anything different.
CHOCOLATE PUDDING: 5 stars. I put the avocado puree in this and believe it or not my two sons complained that is was "too much chocolate tasting!" The pudding was that good.
MACARONI AND CHEESE: 5 stars. I tried putting the sweet potato puree in with a box mix and there was no taste difference. I mixed the puree withe the milk and you could taste the puree. The kids actually said it tasted better than before!!
FROZEN YOGURT POPS: 5 stars. Very good, very sweet. I do not own popsicle molds so I used those multi-color cups from toddler days (my kids are 8 & 10 yrs old) and although they worked great - I bought popsicle sticks from a craft store - next time I am going to use smaller dixie cups so the portions are smaller.
The recipes are mistake proof as well; I put avocado puree rather than the brocolli puree in pizza sauce to make pizza burgers (Jessica says to label your bags, guess now I know why) but it still tasted good. It actually made them taste a bit sweeter, like I had put banana peppers in the recipe as well.
One error I made was when I was done with the puree was I put all the puree in one large Zip-lock bag. Follow Jessica's advice and use smaller bags so you can pull out just how much you need. I pureed the following veggies the first day: Summer squash, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, carrots, avocados, spinach, zucchini and sweet potatoes. I bought a bag of frozen blueberries. I am little type A but I wanted all the puree to be available so I could try as many recipes as possible. If you want to try a recipe or two but don't own all the equipment (especially a food processor, which if you are going to do this long term you will need) try the sweet potato recipes. You can bake a sweet potato and mash it up with a fork and some water. And one sweet potato goes a very long way. I used three and I have enought puree to feed a day care. For a week. The avocado would be another one to try without all the equipment, as it is easily mashed with a fork and some water. The borcolli and caulifower recipes will require a food processor as they are tougher vegetables to mash, even in a steamed state.
There has been much discussion about another book that was published last spring and "competition" with this book. Well I am no expert but there is no way that this book could have been put together and published in six months. Why can't both books be on the market? I am sure both authors want the same thing: Better diets for us all. I have ordered the other cookbook as well, there is room for both on my shelf.
As for the argument that we are lying to our kids: Big whoop-de-doo. I have eaten more sweet potatoes, brocolli, califlower, carrots, etc. in the past week that I have in the past six months. Do I present veggies in their natural state? Yes. Do my kids always eat them? No. But at least they are presented and I know they are still eating them in the puree. Mealtimes should be about talking and sharing, not arguing over food. My younger son likes to help with cooking and baking and he knows the purees are in there and he could care less, as long as can still eat. I highly recommend this cookbook and as soon as I receive the other cookbook I will write a review of that book as well. This book, to me, is a great teaching tool about nutrition. My kids and I have gone through the recipes together and discussed which ones we want to try. Do my kids eat cake and ice cream? Of course, just not every day. We talk about nutrition in a matter of fact way: These are the things to make your body grow. Period. No arguing, no crying, no bribing. I am sort of like Dragnet that way: "Just the facts, ma'am!"
I also want to edit my review to add that I could not help notice that all the one star and rwo star reviews are very critical of the author's personal life. I sincerely hope that folks can see through such attempts at being critical of the author because she is once divorced and is now married to a celebrity. It is sad that such personal attacks are listed in what should be a simple book review.

Good idea, not-so-good recipes

I don't have kids and I already eat veggies, but I bought this just to add more into my diet. The puree idea is great, but the recipes are too bland for me. She gives very little info on the puree section, so it's nothing I couldn't have figured out on my own. I do appreciate some of the ideas, like adding cauliflower puree to tuna salad (better than it sounds), but I'll do that with my own recipes in the future.

Good ideas, decent recipes, still worth it

I saw the Oprah show with Jessica and was so impressed by Oprah's glorious review of this cookbook. So, I immediately ordered it and had to wait a month for it to ship because it was backordered (because of Oprah's show, I'm sure!) In the meantime, I made the brownies. Let me be clear, these were edible but that's about it. Jerry and/or Oprah saying that this would be the last food they would choose on death row says one thing...they need to get out and eat more! I would never make those again! So, I was disappointed when waiting for the book. That being said, I made the chocolate chip cookies and they were fine. Not an awesome cookie but for what they were, they were good and my kids loved them. I have since just used my Nestle Tollhouse recipe and added a can of chickpeas which is easy and little more healthy. I didn't care for the mashed cauliflower recipe and currently use one from South Beach Diet that my whole family loves. So, I think the book gives a lot of ideas to help parents boost the nurtitional value of their cooking but it's not the greatest thing since sliced bread.
