Button too hard for kids to push

We got this book when our twins were little and they loved it, laughing along with the laugh button. But as they got older, they wanted to push the button themselves. They are now almost 14 months old and still don't have the strength in their fingers to push the button. They used to enjoy it, but now they just get frustrated. We'll have to put it away until they are little older. So I would say it's good for really young kids, and good for older kids, but not in between.

Conceived by award-winning graphic designer Hildebrand, who has designed cookbooks for Nigella Lawson and others, the diversity of pasta morphology, from Agnolotti to Ziti, is revealed through historical anecdotes, recipes, and an eye-catching b&w aesthetic. The book starts with the basics, demystified: salt, fat, cooking, and quantity. Kenedy then covers dry vs. fresh, and provides recipes for several pastas and for three authentic sauces that form the foundation for many of the sauces in the book. From the obscure story of Strozzapreti ("priest stranglers") to the humorous warming red pepper and whiskey sauce for Radiatore pasta, or "radiators," one learns how shapes are created to maximize surface area and sauce delivery. The ingredients needed for over 200 sauce preparations run the gamut from obscure (Lumace alla Lumache, or Snails with Snails) to the near pedestrian, like Frankfurters and Fontina, a recommended pairing with the wheel shaped Rotelline, "a complex, arguably uninspired shape that was only possible with the advancement of the pasta industries mechanization," an advancement that was apparently "much lauded by the Fascists." A Pasta Anthropology ... and then Dinner :)

As the full title states, "The Perfect Shape + The Perfect Sauce = THE GEOMETRY OF PASTA," so the talents of book designer Caz Hildebrand + London chef Jacob Kenedy = this terrific book.

Part history-of-pasta and part cookbook, it begins with an overview of pastas (southern Italian peasants' plain semolina to wealthy northerners' incorporation of egg and different starches) and tomato sauces (also varying from light to rich), and the concept of matching the delicacy/sturdiness of a pasta to that of a sauce. And then comes that geometry -- the actual pairings of those shapes and sauces via a 270-page alphabetic encyclopedia of dozens and dozens of pasta shapes, including:

* A short history of each pasta (referencing climate, culture and politics/economics), for example that intricate pastas were made "when housewives had to fill long winter evenings," and the delicate and haughty pastas of the Renaissance, which "specialist nuns would make in their convents";
* A b/w graphic of its shape (see page samples near the book's cover image, above);
* In some cases, recipes for making that shape of pasta at home;
* In all cases, recipes for sauces/fillings suited to that shape;
* Suggestions for other sauces (an Index makes it easy to locate sauce recipes).

I'd expected this book to be glossy and slightly oversized, so was surprised to find it the size and construction of a hardcover novel. While that doesn't sound like a book to be taken into the kitchen and later wiped down, you'll want to do so -- it contains recipes for every level of cook, from quick sauces with a few common ingredients, to sauces involving a dozen ingredients and progressive steps that are mini-tutorials in cooking technique. They include olive oil and/or butter and a wide range of fish, fowl and meat. Most serve 2-4 people as a main course; some serve 6-8 and a few feed a crowd. But even if you're an armchair foodie with little intention of preparing the recipes, this book's design and interesting (even amusing) discussion make it a delightful read.

Unique, delicious and quite fabulous!

I have never seen a book like "The Geometry of Pasta" before. A graphic design inspired book about pasta? Black and white, no photographs and yet illustrated artistically and accurately. This book was clearly created by people who care deeply about pasta, who have studied it from all angles and perhaps obsess about it, just a little? Which is not a bad thing!

I tested several of the recipes and for the most part, were wonderful and delicious. I still wonder why recipes like the medium tomato sauce, which clearly the author is not a fan of, were included in the book. Yet it is that honesty and casual approach to the writing I enjoyed immensely.

Although the book may appear clinical, I assure you, it is not. There is personality throughout. I for one will treasure my copy. I have been looking for a book on pasta dishes that range from the simple to the complex. It has the beautiful simple pasta recipe you associate with genius of Italian cooking, yet there are also recipes that use oxtail and rabbit for the more adventurous and bold cook. Either way, there is a lot for everyone to explore and enjoy.

lots of information about pasta

This is a different type of book. I don't think it is a cook book, but it kind of is. What is does is give you information on the different types of pastas', what their function is and how the pasta is made. Then provides the recipe. There are so many different types, different ingredients and cooking methods. It describes the origin of the recipe which is interesting. There are some fantastic and unusual recipes in this book. It is one of the more interesting books concerning cooking that we have. Plus, its interesting reading. Also it has fantastic sauce recipes.

A sharp & witty portrait of the foibles of academics.

As a sociologist who teaches just the sort of research of which Lurie writes, of course I've always cherished this book, & I've followed its publishing history (it was originally furnished with a tacky, misrepresenting sci-fi cover, was O.P. for a while, & blessedly has been reissued). I also cherish the way it represents Lurie's many virtues: fine, tight writing; delicious word-play; witty imagery; & sharp observations of everyday life that remind readers of the social selves they may be forced to don--& how those social selves are at odds with their desires as individuals.
I've also used the book when I teach fieldwork sociology, the very discipline that Lurie's professors try to practice. Students are always fascinated by Lurie's sharp lesson in what not to do.

spirituality, group delusion and the perils of research

"Imaginary Friends" deals with spirituality, group delusion and the strange flowers of thought blooming in isolated conditions. It takes the old myth of the 'hidden people' and impresses it on a small, benign cult not dissimilar to Heaven's Gate set in an ordinary neighbourhood in an ordinary little town.

Two sociologists join the cult to research small-group phenomena and are increasingly drawn into the interactions and rituals of the cult as events escalate. The Coming is prophesied and tensions rise, culminating in the breakdown of the main researcher and and a lull in the cult's proceedings. Yet, the story continues....

The novel raises valid observations on conducting research and the blurring of lines between observer and participant; the characters are eminently believable, which made this an enjoyable read.

One of my Lurie favorites

To me, this is a great look at how people fool themselves...the people who want to believe in aliens, and also the people who fool themselves into thinking they can get involved with a group and not interact with it.

With Lurie's sharp eye for character and fine ear for dialogue, it is easy for a reader to get pulled in and immerse themselves in the world she creates. Based on a sociology study of groups who held the same beliefs as the fictional group she creates, I feel Lurie goes beyond the dry academic studies to illuminate what really goes on when people find their most mundane beliefs challenged by the surities of a larger group...such as society at large.

A real eye-opener

Since I work on the Internet, where every other post is about "creating wealth" and "overcoming your money blocks," this book was really refreshing. It's well-written and easy to read. The author manages to avoid seeming self-righteous; he focuses on what he did and even admits that, at times, he was a little too concerned with following his own rules. I especially liked the parts where he talks about finding genuine joy in what he was doing: eating delicious food, hiking and having time to think.

The obvious challenge is, we can't all do this. Someone has to write and publish the books. Some of us are simply less talented than others. Our modern life is set up for car travel, even if you hitch hike or get rides with friends.

Additionally, if we buy fewer products and services, we are displacing ordinary people from jobs. The only way to make this work on a large scale is to establish communities, as he discusses.

On the other hand, we can simplify our lives. I stopped watching television a long time ago (although I did go to a sports bar to watch the WNBA finals this year).
I don't drive a car, but to make this option feasible I live in a big city with a lot of other things that create a big carbon footprint.

Ultimately the book makes a powerful statement that's quite memorable. The author's matter-of-fact British style helps a lot. It will be interesting to see what he does next and whether the book can make a difference beyond a book and a few feature stories.

An Inevitable Comparison

I had just finished reading, "Twelve by Twelve," by William Powers. It's his account of living in an off-grid structure that is twelve by twelve feet. I loved the book. The fact that Powers was able to make toilet composting and foraging dramatic and fascinating speaks a lot to his ability as a writer. The same can be said of Mark Boyle's book. After reading an on-line article about his experience and watching it pop up over and over again on my list of Amazon recommendations, I caved in and purchased the book. I was a bit hesitant. I mean, how many books about composting and tea made from nettles can one guy read?

I'm glad I bought the book. And, I'm glad I read the two books back-to-back. Two great takes on one fascinating life strategy. Where Powers left me feeling very spiritual and took great pains to avoid judgment, Boyle gave me a constant sense of urgency and felt compelled to keep reminding me of my carbon footprint and wasteful ways. The book could have been too preachy, but Boyle is able to make his points over and over without putting the reader on the defense. That's effective writing. I also enjoyed Boyle's side-bars from everything to making paper to websites that promote swapping items as apposed to making more of something. I recommend both books. And, I recommend reading them close together. It was a great reading experience.

Expected detailed description on Daily Life

I heard Mark Boyle speak on NPR and was compelled to buy this book because I was hoping it would be detailed in how to live without money for a year. I was very disappointed. The book is 201 pages of large print. In this short book, it covered mostly the idea of human impact on the earth and what can be done differently in broad strokes. If that is what you are looking for I give the book 3 stars.

I will give you some examples of what I was hoping for.
During this year of no money he gains weight. This is despite being vegan, living off of mostly food he grew himself , foraged, or dumpster dived AND was extremely physically active. He would do 120 pushups every morning and ride his bike 60 miles a week. On the back cover of the book there is a picture of him with his shirt off and he is a beefcake. How did he accomplish this from a diet of chard and dandelions??? He did not write in detail on what he ate. Cooking? Again unclear - it almost seemed that all of his meals were steamed vegetables. For an entire year!!!! Then this gets into really how many meals was he provided as a barter exchange - again I have no idea because Mark did not elaborate. I would have been interested in what work did he do, and what kind of food did he get in exchange - I was hoping for all the nitty gritty. Finally, he had a vegetable garden going as he started his endeavor. Mark does not explain anything about the work done on this garden prior the start of the money less year. On page 135 he lists all the potential food he could eat during the summer. Nice list, but that is not telling a story. And what about the story during the non-summer months? The list has 31 items grown - does that mean Mark grew them all? That is an amazing feat in itself - but again, Mark does not elaborate.

I feel Mark glossed over various details to make it seem much easier to live with out money than it actually is. Some more examples: He supposedly drank from a river possibly exclusively. It did flood, and typically when rivers flood they get very murky - any issues drinking muddy water? Not mentioned.

He lives in a small trailer. Late fall and all of winter it is cold and dark around 6pm. How did he deal with this? Apparently a piece of cake. He has a hand crank flash light, and that is about all we know. How did he keep warm? What kind of clothes did he have? Bedding? He does not elaborate. If it is cold and you crawl into bed at 7pm - then what? Wake up 8 hours later in the dark at 3am? Mark does not explain - other that it is no problem. I suspect he was warming up as much a possible in peoples homes, or some building he was helping out at. I truly believe the cold and dark for months would be a struggle. He does not even allude to this, so I wonder if it is because he wants to maintain the impression that this lifestyle is so doable.

Towards the end of his moneyless year, he sets out chopping wood in March, so he would have it for fuel in case he decides to go for a 2nd year. What is unexplained is why did he have to do that for year 2 if he did not have to for year 1. Did he use up ALL the wood/fuel from other sources in year 1? No explanation.

He gets lonely and puts an ad out to find a date. Does not say where he posted the ad, and did any ladies respond. If none did - tells us about it. If some did, what did you do on your dates? How did it go? Who were the girls? Mark gives us nothing.

Mark writes about the great thing about hitchhiking is meeting great people. He does some hitchhiking, but does not give us a crumb on any of these great people he met.

He has skills in raising food and foraging. Not a peep about how he learned these skills.

I thought I was going to read a book full of daily life details on such an interesting undertaking. But what I got mostly was theories on what is wrong with the world, how it could be different, and only broad strokes on the daily life being moneyless.
