Good intro to the topic even if marred by annoyances

Kindle format: sadly this book suffers from "Kindle translation syndrome", that strange ailment that causes kindle books to just look odd. For the most part, in this book, it doesn't cause any real issues with reading other than being slightly distracting (e.g., words with certain diacritics will occasionally appear to have extra spacing around individual letters leaving the impression that they're actually multiple words and bullet lists have odd indents and line spacing). I don't know how difficult it is to properly format Kindle books or if it's a matter of author/publisher carelessness or simply poor import tools from Amazon but in this case it's only an annoyance.

Sexism: Another reviewer mentioned a concern over sexist language in the examples. I can confirm this is the case. It's not necessarily intolerable but it is jarring. Often it's simply a matter of the author's worldview being presented as "self-evident". A trivial example: when he posits that "girl" is likely to become a generic term for female human (all ages) because it's often used to refer to adult women as well as children he seems unaware that in most modern contexts a man referring to an adult female human being as a "girl" is not acceptable. And there's also that rather interesting definition of "girl" he offers in the same context: "unmarried female human".

Core Content: Assuming you can overlook the annoying formatting issues (or if you're getting the hardcopy) and you're willing to overlook the sexism the core product is worth the price. It provides a solid foundation to start playing around in the world of conlanging.
N.B.: I'm 100% new to conlangs so I cannot judge it's completeness, only its usefulness to a beginner.

Alternatives: In many ways I found The Art of Language Invention: From Horse-Lords to Dark Elves, the Words Behind World-Building by David J. Peterson a more enjoyable read and in many cases I found concepts better explained by Peterson but this book does provide more details on some topics.

Bottom Line: If you're really interested in conlanging, this book will get you started. If you're kind of interested and/or just want to see how it's done, read The Art of Language Invention: From Horse-Lords to Dark Elves, the Words Behind World-Building instead.

Wow.

The Language Construction Kit, online, is THE resource for "conlangers" (people who make up languages for fun and profit - but you knew that already). I personally can remember printing it out at least twice in my teens. (And holy HECK that was a lot of paper!) Every example mentioned for building your language (firmly based upon actual linguistic concepts - and yes, I think this is a good companion book for an intro to linguistics class) is given with examples from either real-world languages or from some of the author's own conlangs.

So why buy the book when you can get the kit for free?

Well, first off, if you've ever visited the LCK online, you should support the guy who created it. How? By buying the book.

Secondly - and somewhat more importantly - this isn't just a reprint of the online version. It's expanded (there's a whole new FASCINATING section on semantics, for example) and it's convenient to have on your desk.

So why only four stars?

No fault of the author's, but the formatting was a bit odd. Sometimes a section header would appear as the last line on a page, or a line would be spaced v e r y s t r a n g e l y, and that made it hard to read. The formatting issues are *not* his fault, but they *did* require me to re-read more often than I'd like because they made it hard to understand some things wherever they occurred.

A must have for fantasy world building

I bought this book because I want to make distinctive names in a variety of made-up languages for my Pathfinder (like D&D 3.5) game. The author's website (zompist) appears to have been around for quite a while, and seems well connected and well respected, but for some reason I had never come across it. I found it at a good time though; just days before his book was released. The website has a lot of good information, but the book is better because it is more of everything on the website. The website is more like an overview, but this goes into detail, and I got a lot more out of the book form of the material than I did his website. The information on how humans make sounds is quite possibly the missing link I needed to go from the ideas I have in my head into actual written examples of a made up language.

In addition to being a very practical guide to help me create interesting sounding names, the book is just fun to read overall. The author seems to know a little bit about a whole lot of languages, and it's fun to read about the subtle little nuances that exist that I've never noticed.

Powerful Stories; Transformational Research

After reading The New Jim Crow, a colleague recommended this as a next read. Both books undertake a critique of the prison system that diminishes our nation and disproportionately oppresses our Black sisters and brothers. Arrested Justice raises awareness of the unheard voices of Black women who suffer at the hands of their neighbors and those who are charged to serve and protect all citizens and residents of our cities and towns. Dr. Beth Richie eloquently dissects the complicated terrain of Black women's experiences of violence,the complicity of the prison nation, and problematizes looking at any one social descriptor in isolation (e.g. race, gender or economic status). She engages the issues, such as poverty, loyalty within the Black community, sexual orientation, and violence at the hands of family, community, and strangers, with depth and insight. In particular, the painful narratives that she shares will leave you disturbed but hungry for insight into how these realities can be diffused and dismantled.

This is serious s*** here people. Women are getting tortured and raped and especially women of color...they are victims of a prison-industrial complex that isn't out to serve anything or anybody except the white male phallocracy that remains in power even until now.

Excellent introductory textbook!

After nearly a year of using this book with hundreds of college students, I can easily attest to the excellence of this textbook. It offers many outstanding, modern pedagogic features such as frequent summaries of the "take-home lesson", truly useful and not merely decorative graphics (of the high quality one can expect from Freeman), and other features already mentioned in the reviews Amazon has included at the beginning of this page. Supporting materials such as the student study guide are very good, and the instructor's manual is massive. The Power Points give lecturers classroom access to the first-rate graphics.

The writing is of a quality which is above the average one sees today in even good textbooks. The author has chosen interesting and fairly sophisticated material to give students a chance to see why biologists find life fascinating. two example: physiological adaptations to high altitude, and thermoregulation.

This is an especially good choice for a one-semester life science courses for non-majors. You also have your choice of editions with or without physiology. If you are using this book as a student, consider buying the study guide, and be sure to do all of the text exercises.

Student Says Best Bio Book Ever

I'm a philosophy major who had to take a life science class to graduate. This was the assigned textbook and it's great. Fun to read and very informative. There's a big difference between the editions though so make sure to get the one that was assigned ---I made that mistake. This book is obviously a passion project of the professor and the updates aren't cosmetic (read to make money) but quite substantial. In fact if you're interested in biology you could read this textbook for fun. Also he wrote Mean Genes and that's quite good as well, but more of an armchair read. The professor teaches at UCLA and his lectures are available online.

very good book on biology. It is really identical to all of the other 'What is life?" books that share the same cover. Instructor's edition has no real significant changes from the student edition and can be used in any biology class that requires this book. highly recommend it :-)
