This book was truly written by Celia Cruz. You can almost see her speaking to you as you read her words. If you are lucky enough to be bilingual get the Spanish version. You'll love it!!! Celia's kindness and honesty is refreshing and inspiring. I had admired Celia Cruz for a long time, this book made me realize why I had found her so likable. Celia was a great human being and a great inspiration to us all, not just as a great entertainer but a wonderful person. I will always treasure this book.

Yo buscaba una Biografía en la que sintiera que ella me está contando su vida, con sus palabras y su forma de ser. No quería que fuera escrita por otra persona y esta reunió esas condiciones, me divierte mucho, me hace pensar y conocerla mas aún. Tuvo una vida increible, fue un ejemplo de vida, y creo que este libro reúne esos pequeños y grandes momentos relatados por ella.

Celia is an Angel ... And this book reveals it!

This is my second review of this book which I re-read (I don't know why Amazon lost the first review). The book is a good read and very well descriptive of La Reina de Guanguanco ("Queen of Guanguanco"). Celia spoke of many points in her life which we all can relate to. She also spoke highly about her wishes to return to her homeland. I'm glad we have her in the USA! She is worthy of her success as a human being and a fine negra-latina. Bravo!

The complete "War and Peace" of appliance repair!

First off, may I start off by saying, this book must have taken a decade to write. It is simply huge (and daunting at first). It's pages are crammed packed with anything you may have for questions on the subject, right down to the customer interaction that you have with your homeowner. Gas, electric, small, large, the answers are here. It is written concise and very easy to follow. Any new repair tech. could bring this with him/her on the job and slip out for a minute to verify their findings with the information printed and it is like bringing a veteran to the site with you. Great for the pro who likes to study to keep sharp too!

Great investment for the do it yourself homeowner.

I had an old appliance repair but it was quite outdated. I was skeptical about this having relevant usable information that wasn't just theory. This manual explains the workings of almost all from stoves to microwaves and all the nuts and bolts about their operation. I repaired a friends clothes dryer with it the second week I had it and charged them $45.00 for the fix. About half of a service call and they were very happy too.

nice and concise

As a statistics graduate student in the mid 1970s I took the three quarter graduate course sequence in mathematical statistics from Brad Efron and Charles Stein at Stanford. Efron taught the first two quarters and Stein the third. Our "official" texts for the course were Rao's "Linear Statistical Inference" and Ferguson's decision theoretic text. The books were useful reference sources but we also relied heavily on the instructors notes and Lehmann's "Testing Statistical Hypotheses".
However when I was preparing for my qualifying exam, I found this monograph by Silvey to be very helpful. It is concise and thus is great as a refresher for the important fundamental concepts that are all covered very well. I find it to be a great reference source when I need to refresh my memory on important points.

The book is only 190 pages but covers all the basics of mathematical statistics. Chapter 1 introduces the concepts of hypothesis testing and decision theory. Chapter 2 develops the theory of minimum variance unbiased estimation, covering concepts of sufficiency, completeness, efficiency, Fisher information, the Cramer-Rao inequality and its generalization and the Rao-Blackwell theorem. Chapter 3 covers the method of least squares and presents the Gauss-Markov theorem, weighted least squares and theoretical properties under assumptions of normally distributed errors. Chapter 4 presents maximum likelihood and its large sample properties. Chapter 5 covers confidence sets and 6 hypothesis testing. To emphasize the conciseness, Chapter 5 is 7 pages and Chapter 6 only 14 pages (including exercises). Sequential tests are covered in Chapter 8, non-parametric methods in Chapter 9, the Bayesian approach in Chapter 10 and basic decision theory in Chapter 11.

It is a shame that this book is out of print. An Amazon reader who is a statistics graduate student asked me for help understanding the Neyman-Pearson theory. Since he is having difficulty with his class text he was looking for a better source. Lehmann's book gives the rigorous mathematical proofs but I recommended Silvey as perhaps a better source for getting some insight. He may try to get a copy through Amazon. If so I hope that Amazon can find one for him!

Concise and Insightful

This is an excellent text on statistics for serious, mathematically-minded readers. It covers every basic point in statistics in a concise and somewhat abstract manner without heavy use of measure theory. Personally, I am not very fond of abstractness, and this book does a good job of motivating the concepts. Therefore, the application-oriented reader will, hopefully, maintain his interest despite the reading being somewhat dense. It's a good reference and DEFINITELY not a bedtime read--unless, of course, you want to dream about those sexy math symbols.

Bo Brinkman is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He has received best paper awards for his work in computer ethics and algorithms and was published in the prestigious Journal of the ACM. His recent work on the ethical implications of augmented reality has been featured on the blogs of the Chronicle of Higher Education, Fast Company, and Read Write Web. Alton F. Sanders began his computer career in 1963. He has worked as a software developer, software consultant, system manager, and university professor. He is now Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

See this book. See this book make you crack up! Fun, fun, fun!

This book is hilarious. It not only skewers Dick and Jane reading primers quite nicely (though, let's face it, most kids would seize up with some of the longer words in this parody) but also pokes fun at the Original Series and many of its clichés. It also was surprisingly substantial in its content, and is drawn well too. Fans who grew up with Star Trek will have a blast with it, and it was obviously done with love for the material and a tremendous sense of fun.

My wife and I liked it. I read it aloud and the text worked well. The art is spot-on.

If the book had been a little longer I would have given it five stars.

Good story

This is a higher level continuation of "El viaje de su vida." A couple of high school students end up stranded in Puerto Rico with no money. It's a little longer than "El viaje de su vida." I very much like this series, especially the ones by Lisa Ray Turner and Blaine Ray.

My students loved it

My Spanish students are often frustrated that their vocabulary level just isn't quite up to the ability of reading "real" Spanish Literature, but both the Level 2 and Level 1 students are able to study a short list of vocabulary and work through an interesting story that keeps them wanting to turn the pages and discuss it the next week in class. I thought it was QUITE well done.

Mitchell Zuckoff is the author of six previous nonfiction books, including the New York Times bestsellers Lost in Shangri-La and Frozen in Time, and a professor of journalism at Boston University. The Annex Security Team consists of the five surviving CIA contract operators who responded to the September 11, 2012, attack in Benghazi.

13 Hours - a compelling read

A riveting account of what happened during the "battle of Benghazi". The book is hard to put down. It is the account of what happened during the attack on our diplomatic outpost and CIA annex by the heroic defenders of the compounds. The book describes what the State Department's security team experienced during the attack. The book contains little of the political back and forth just the facts of what happened during the attack. The book reads like a great thriller novel. The story shows heroes still exist in this world of ambivalence.

13 hours of hell on earth!

I loved the background of Benghazi's history in the beginning and how it transitioned to the events of 2012. The fast paced, down to earth account given by the survivors made me swell with pride that there are good guys out there, willing to take on evil to protect others and what we should all hold dear. I would recommend this book to anyone who is on the fence about what happened that horrible day and hope they would see how everything they see in 1 minute sound bytes is not always the whole story.

The brave surviving defenders who largely relate this sad event clearly want it this way

Factual account of the desperate fight the defenders of our Benghazi outposts undertook. I bought this book 9/10 at Costco and finished early this morning 9/12. The author makes it quite clear this is purely a factual account - no politics. And there shouldn't be any. The brave surviving defenders who largely relate this sad event clearly want it this way.

Kudos to the author. And Bravo Zulu to the defenders.
