Great Book!

If you own one of these extraordinary cars this is your chance to enjoy the inside story of how a close knit team of gifted men and women brought a car back from the edge and then set a high water mark that will endure for years to come.

It is a story of vision, passion and absolute commitment to creating the best. You get an inside peak at Detroit and Ford in particular, the politics the extraordinary capabilities of the institution and the people inside. You get to see the birth of a modern day supercar from concept to delivery and meet the people and inparticular the one man who made it happen against all odds.

If you are lucky enough to own or have owned one of these cars this book is a must have addition to the history you are part of. Transformative book backed up by anecdotal information

I read this years ago. It changed my life. My sister's husband died recently and I thought she'd be comforted by the hope one can derive from a belief in a benevolent universe. The short chapters each start with an explanation of Quantum Mechanics and what a hologram is. Then there are anecdotes describing near death experiences, out of body experiences and other seriously strange occurrences.In fact, my sister had read Seriously Strange by Sudhir Kakar and was impressed by the scientific community opening up a bit to the existence of a "spiritual" dimension or (s). I feel, even though he did not wait for the backing of the scientific community, Michael Talbot wrote very convincingly about these subjects and began the education of Non- scientists in the possible inferences derived from Quantum Physics.

The Whole in Every Part

A conceptual breakthrough for consciousness researchers and new physics theoreticians. Puncturing the Brain equals Mind theory, Talbot shows that we are greater than our physical boundaries, and rolls in new science into the equation, that man and cosmos are part of an interconnected hologram, with the whole in every part. Neuroscientist Karl Pribram, initially in collaboration with physicist David Bohm, reached the conclusion that the brain is a hologram. Dr. Bohm felt that the universe was was a hologram and not an objective reality, infinitely interconnected. In science, we learn about things by breaking it down to its parts, but the cosmic superhologram cannot be studied this way, because it is holonomic rather than reductive. We must put the mystery together. At the highest level, stars in the sky, fish in the sea, the heart in our chest, pulse as one entity. Time and space are illusions, because past, present and future exist simultaneously.

It's a hologram..for the 39th time!

This book started off tremendously. A heretofore little popularized scientist, Bohm, is detailed. His ideas are shown to be way in advance of much of our 21st century style thinking in physics, neurophysiology, and elsewhere.

However, somewhere along the way, hard science seemed to give way to...I'm not sure what! Tony Robbins? One minute I'm reading about fascinating experiements, and the next about faith healing. And when someone tells me about astounding results that others "ignored" -- for the ninth time -- my skepticism begins to grow.

As metaphor, the hologram is a wonderful one. But science does not end at the metaphor, it begins there. It is a jumping off point, whether the metaphor is holography, an ocean wave, or a rice pudding. These models must be confirmed. They must provide predictive power. Instead of moving that way, all I kept hearing is Spike Lee's voice repeating "hologram, hologram, hologram, hologram, ..."

Crime and punishment, passion and loyalty, betrayal and redemption are only a few of the ingredients in Shantaram, a massive, over-the-top, mostly autobiographical novel. Shantaram is the name given Mr. Lindsay, or Linbaba, the larger-than-life hero. It means "man of God's peace," which is what the Indian people know of Lin. What they do not know is that prior to his arrival in Bombay he escaped from an Australian prison where he had begun serving a 19-year sentence. He served two years and leaped over the wall. He was imprisoned for a string of armed robberies peformed to support his heroin addiction, which started when his marriage fell apart and he lost custody of his daughter. All of that is enough for several lifetimes, but for Greg Roberts, that's only the beginning.

He arrives in Bombay with little money, an assumed name, false papers, an untellable past, and no plans for the future. Fortunately, he meets Prabaker right away, a sweet, smiling man who is a street guide. He takes to Lin immediately, eventually introducing him to his home village, where they end up living for six months. When they return to Bombay, they take up residence in a sprawling illegal slum of 25,000 people and Linbaba becomes the resident "doctor." With a prison knowledge of first aid and whatever medicines he can cadge from doing trades with the local Mafia, he sets up a practice and is regarded as heaven-sent by these poor people who have nothing but illness, rat bites, dysentery, and anemia. He also meets Karla, an enigmatic Swiss-American woman, with whom he falls in love. Theirs is a complicated relationship, and Karla’s connections are murky from the outset.

Roberts is not reluctant to wax poetic; in fact, some of his prose is downright embarrassing. Throughought the novel, however, all 944 pages of it, every single sentence rings true. He is a tough guy with a tender heart, one capable of what is judged criminal behavior, but a basically decent, intelligent man who would never intentionally hurt anyone, especially anyone he knew. He is a magnet for trouble, a soldier of fortune, a picaresque hero: the rascal who lives by his wits in a corrupt society. His story is irresistible. At the start of this massive, thrillingly undomesticated potboiler, a young Australian man bearing a false New Zealand passport that gives his name as "Lindsay" flies to Bombay some time in the early '80s. On his first day there, Lindsay meets the two people who will largely influence his fate in the city. One is a young tour guide, Prabaker, whose gifts include a large smile and an unstoppably joyful heart. Through Prabaker, Lindsay learns Marathi (a language not often spoken by gora, or foreigners), gets to know village India and settles, for a time, in a vast shantytown, operating an illicit free clinic. The second person he meets is Karla, a beautiful Swiss-American woman with sea-green eyes and a circle of expatriate friends. Lin's love for Karla—and her mysterious inability to love in return—gives the book its central tension. "Linbaba's" life in the slum abruptly ends when he is arrested without charge and thrown into the hell of Arthur Road Prison. Upon his release, he moves from the slum and begins laundering money and forging passports for one of the heads of the Bombay mafia, guru/sage Abdel Khader Khan. Eventually, he follows Khader as an improbable guerrilla in the war against the Russians in Afghanistan. There he learns about Karla's connection to Khader and discovers who set him up for arrest. Roberts, who wrote the first drafts of the novel in prison, has poured everything he knows into this book and it shows. It has a heartfelt, cinemascope feel. If there are occasional passages that would make the very angels of purple prose weep, there are also images, plots, characters, philosophical dialogues and mysteries that more than compensate for the novel's flaws. A sensational read, it might well reproduce its bestselling success in Australia here.

One's first impression of this novel is that it is simply a good story, but one soon comes to realize that Roberts is also a gifted creator of characters--not only Lindsay but also Prabaker, who becomes Lindsay's guide, caretaker, and entree into various elements of Bombay society. Soon, too, one becomes aware and appreciative of Roberts' felicitous writing style. In all, despite the novel's length, it is difficult not to be ensnared by it. The Best Novel of the 21st Century...so far

FINALLY, a gut-wrenching, harrowing, well-penned novel, whose author suffers not from the literary constipation of most current "highbrow" authors (He's faced down far more deadly things, chronicled herein, to be affrighted by sharp penned editors.) - A book, in short, that will make your heart bleed with the depths to which the human soul can sink and the glories to which it can rise. ----I read so many books, but this is the first true work of art and genius published in this new century that I've managed to discover. It is a book from which I'm still recovering from having read. Like all great art, it leaves one with a new perspective on the world and causes one to reconnoitre the heart's bearings. The book strips away the lies we tell ourselves and leaves the heartstrings bare for the reader to see, where he/ she will recognise his/her own.

Let's get something straight here: This is not a book of "purple prose" or any form of sentimentality. Each tear shed is wrung from harrowing experience. As Roberts writes, "One of the reasons we crave love, and seek it so desperately, is that love is the only cure for loneliness, and shame, and sorrow. But some feelings sink so deep into the heart that only loneliness can help you find them again. Some truths about yourself are so painful that only shame can help you live with them. And some things are just so sad that only your soul can do the crying for you."--Your soul will have cried with Roberts's many times before the end of the book.

This is truly a book for lovers of great literature. Roberts writes, "I never found a club or a clan or idea that was more important to me than the men and women who believed in it."--This book is one that values the mystery of people and the mystery of human existence above all else. ----Including yours, reader.

Nice prose style but no editor

Interesting real story (if it is, indeed, real, the historical basis seems to be a bit vague, my guess is that most of it is made up) and clearly the man can write prose, but the book is too long and it is over-rated. The first third is a series of never ending conversations in a Bombay restaurant in which we are introduced to a plethora of characters. It's a slow, very static start and there are way too many names to remember. Then the second third is great. This is where the story lies. The part where he goes to the slum to be a doctor, gets thrown in prison, and gets out. The rest is beautifully written but boring. I'm not surprised the sequel isn't really selling nor that the movie has taken so long to appear. The last third of this book is a HUGE let down. It is slow and unbelievable. For some reason the author has tagged a war story onto what is already a hybrid of genres - prison escape and love story. It just feels too much. The writer heroin addict can learn languages and now he is Rambo? He seems to train forever too. Several years if you add up all the 'And we practised this for three months...' In general, the narrative is at times too ponderous, which is frustrating because at heart this is an action story, a book for guys not gals, and not quite the literary masterpiece it thinks it is. The philosophy conversations between the protagonist and Khader, for example, don't work and are a bit silly. A mafia don espousing on the meaning of life might be a good idea for a character but the realization is cornball. The conversations are too basic, too high school-ish. The 'love story' if you can call it that is poorly delineated. It's the classic case of show don't tell only this author tells and doesn't show. Protagonist Lin TELLS us repeatedly how beautiful she is, how much he loves her, but we are never SHOWN why. We are not convinced the obviously conniving woman is worthy of so much attention and it makes for a sappy hero. It's also a big disappointment that a story about a man who escaped from a maximum security prison devotes so little space to the escape. Two hundred pages of chit chat with characters you'll never remember to open with and then just a few pages on the escape. There's a novel in this beautiful sprawling mess somewhere but truly it needs an editor. Clearly whoever published this and edited it was too in love with the material. Sorry, it's not Melville.

Outstanding, heads and tails above the run of the mill book!

The books plot, twists, and pace would make a great book in itself but it would have to be shorter. It is over 900 pages. What caught me is without trying to shove it down your throat is the Author's love of people. Good, bad, ugly, beautiful, extremely poor, extremely rich, strange, and even straight out hell types of people. The author and main character who who portrays himself as no pillar of society seems to have an intense love of humans and human nature. Not only are the characters and what they do complex but no matter how deep or shallow they are in crime ranging from petty scammers to murderers and even torturers, in by far most cases he pulls the good out of them and demonstrates that even though people get themselves in these situations regularly, that we consider heinous crimes, there is actually good in them that may be hidden deep but is in every human being.

It not only did its job of entertaining, but got me to thinking philosophically about people when I was not reading it. Anybody that knows me would not consider me a philosophical thinker. That is why I rated the mood as thoughtful though it works up to to being every bit as much suspenseful. It is an incredible book that starts out interesting and moved on to the point where if I could manage to put it down by midnight I couldn't wait to get myself back to reading it. I read the book twice. After the first time I went to Southeast Asia, not including India which is the setting of the book, but once to Thailand and twice to Nepal. I really enjoyed the people and some of them could make me laugh harder than I ever have in my life. But they were always trying to pull petty scams. Then when I got back from my third trip I read Shantaram the second time and it put things into perspective. They assume we are all rich while the poorest of them live in plywood and cardboard houses with plastic scraps held down by rocks for a roof. So what is it for the Americans who likely paid over 2K Just to get there and back to get suckered in a petty scam. I thought about my loss of $60.00 to a scam and it seemed more ignorance on my part than a crime on their part and just learned to be more prepared and knowledgeable the next time I bought something. I really liked them other than having to be wary of the scam at any time. But that was all part of the some of the best experiences i had in my life. In addition when I saw how many people were poor and how they lived, I just considered it a donation to charity that can't be written off. Big Deal. Those were the best experiences I ever had.

About the Author
Markus Rathgeb completed his Ph.D. dissertation, 'Otl Aicher: Design as a Method of Action', for the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication at the University of Reading in England and has published several articles on Aicher's work in both English and German. He is currently a professor of design methods and graphic design at the University of Cooperative Education, Ravensburg, Germany, and works as a design consultant.

Excellent!

This catalogue is a cohesive and "entertaining" look at Aicher's work. The writing is illuminating and the images are excellent. The breadth of work examined here illustrates the history of this artist and designer, his process and the dynamic images he created. Of course, his work for the Munich Olympics are here, but they are only a part of the entire picture. For me, anyway, this book shed light on how brilliant his vast career was and it has provided new art/designs that I admire. For someone who was not too familiar with Aicher's work, this could be a revelation.

Otl Aicher

Otl Aicher and his collegues has created among the most modern but still timeless graphic design ever. Many of his design programmes are still in use even if they where created 50, 40 or 30 years ago. I think this is due to his method; a palette of few graphic elements, strong grids, well balanced color schemes, combined with an artistic hand and a twinkle in the eye. The art of reduction without losing the soul.

Absolutely Wonderful!!

I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated this book. I have been in business for 10 years and I have a MBA. This book was tremendously valuable to me. I like how the authors put a marketing campaign together in 30 steps. Some steps were not covered as well as others, but it gave you enough information to do your own research if you wanted to use a tactic in more detail. I have used many of these steps over the years and I really like the idea that they were all introduced in one book and in coherent logical steps.

I particularly like using the first few days just to get you and your employees in a marketing frame of mind. One of the hardest things that I have found over the years is to get your employees to recognize that your business is a money-making proposition. This book gave me numerous ways to instill this doctrine in the workplace and I am still using many of them. I must confess that I also work in an Engineering company and I have used some of the concepts just to get people motivated to do their work properly. Marketing a good product can be easy.

I can just say that I give this book an enthusiastic thumbs up, five stars and I plan to evangelize about this book to other business owners as well as continue to use some of these concepts myself.

Nice find

The phrase “you cannot judge a book by its cover” is perfect for this book. At first glance I was sceptical, perhaps the title was just managing to convey the wrong impression. Maybe it was the 30 chapter, 30 day-style as I’ve suffered far too many “self help” and “teach yourself” books that promise the earth and fail to deliver in the past.

As you go through this book it grows on you. Guerrilla acceptance perhaps?

The book promises to give actionable marketing habits for today’s aspiring marketing “guerrillas” in a manageable manner. I personally find such an approach gimmicky and less attractive but this might be a matter of taste. The actual content, when you come to go through it, is more important. There seems to be a seam of gold running through the book and when I did feel some stuff was irrelevant, superficial or just unfocussed it was soon replaced by something that did grab my attention.

This is a book that feels like it is always giving. It can be as “basic” or as “complex” as you want it to be and it seems to act as a great springboard to further thought, reading and action. It feels that it can be suitable for the absolute beginner who has to start thinking about marketing and the more experienced marketeer might find nuggets of good information at the same time. Just looking at the chapter titles can show some of the diversity of this book: the purpose of your marketing, competition and research, positioning, niche marketing, integration, identity and branding, business networking and strategic alliances. There is just a bit of a nagging feeling that towards the end the authors started to flag as some of the remaining chapters began to feel less focussed, relevant and slightly padded.

Yet on the balance of probabilities there was a lot more “plusses” than “minuses” (perceived or otherwise). I enjoyed the style and approach and felt a connection that I was initially sceptical towards. The relatively low price point for this book means that you only need to get a couple of “a-ha!” moments or action points and this reviewer contends that this book is not exactly short of these!

Another Fantastic Coloring Journey – this time into the Ocean Deep

[[VIDEOID:f859a85be9ecd848af27c13bf4306fab]]Johanna Basford is the designer who started my hobby of adult coloring books with her genre defining book, “Secret Garden” and her equally fantastic follow-up “Enchanted Forest”. With her newest book, “Lost Ocean”, she builds upon the stunningly beautiful and extremely intricate designs that I have come to expect from her.

The subject of the coloring book is the ocean. There are so many designs, including: sailing ships, mermaids, fish, sea mammals, jellyfish, and shipwrecks and more flora of the deep than I can count, each page is a wonderful experience in coloring. There seems to be about 80 designs to color which is less than in both of her earlier books. The book is also a hunt for hidden items and there is a key for what you are looking for as well as where they can be found. There is a picture of an octopus that reminds me way too much of Homer Simpson. I may have to color its head yellow with white and blue tentacles.

The one disappointing thing about this book is the paper. It seemed that the artist and publisher had finally understood the need for thicker and/or better paper. Recent versions of “Secret Garden” had improved paper – so much so, that this note is now included at the top of the page in all italics and with caps “Good news for all SECRET GARDEN fans! All editions of SECRET GARDEN now feature thicker and heavier paper stock, fighting bleed-through from ink pens.” From my point of view, one would think “Lost Ocean” would have the upgraded paper. It does not. In fact, it does not even have the same publisher. The paper is thinner and is worse and not as good as the last book. Maybe that is because of the change in publisher, but the artist and her staff should have verified what grade of paper was being used. The artwork makes up for this but I really wish an artist of this caliber's work was presented in the best possible way.

The book (except for a single four page spread design at the back of the book) it is not perforated and almost every marker I have bleeds through. I can use my pencils and my gel pens. As with her previous books, the designs are printed on both sides of the paper.

As I know that I love to use my markers, I have already purchased a second copy of the book so I don't have to choose a medium based on what happens to the backside of my page. I don't do this for many books, but I have found that I prefer to do so with Ms. Basford's as I want to color every page. I decided to purchase the UK version of the book as my second copy as I have heard that it uses a heavier weight paper than the US version. As I am disappointed in the paper in the US version, I'm curious to see the difference between the two when it arrives in 2-3 weeks.

I was so pleased to find this book and my new, relaxing hobby of coloring. I design needlework for my “day job” but that contains a lot of stress (deadlines, trying to perfect the pattern, etc.) Coloring has become my way of relaxing at the end of a day (with music in the background, too!) I find that it helps me fall asleep with an easier mind.

BEWARE: MUCH SMALLER DETAILS.. if you have ARTHRITIS or use READING GLASSES see in store before u buy..

I'm so sad. I really liked her original books, Enchanted Forest and Secret Garden. THIS ONE IS NOT LIKE THEM WHEN IT COMES TO ACTUAL COLORING EXPERIENCE! There are some differences in the paper color being more white in this book vs the other two being more of a natural recycled color. They might not look as "cool" sitting out on a coffee table together. The outer wrapper/book cover on this Lost Ocean book is attached and doesn't come off. It has the same format of looking for "lost items" within a picture and some are two page spreads, etc. I pre-ordered this one, but have to say, if it didn't cost me money to return, it would be going back. Now a teenage girl will be getting this for Christmas. They seem to have forgotten who their target market is.... ADULTS! Make no mistake, if the pictures were blown up in a larger size I would be happy. This book doesn't have much opportunity for outlining or shading techniques simply due to the size of the majority of the pictures. Granted, not all of the pictures are as tightly detailed as some of the photos but the majority of the pages are. (My guess 80-85% finely detailed). You can see from the photos, if you are younger and can see better (I use 1.25 to 1.50 reading glasses) you will probably still need to buy a new set of markers that are .3mm like the STAEDTLER TRIPLUS FINELINER for the colors to show up much. Even the Prismacolor Verithin pencils that can maintain a sharper tip with an excellent sharpener will be a bit of a challenge to show up and stay in the lines in numerous water bubbles through out the book. They are that tiny. I have included pictures of different types of pens and pencils and my experience with them.

NOTES FROM MY USE: Please realize that my observations aren't exact for this book because I made a "quality" heavier weight paper copy for my demonstration since this will be a gift now. I frequently use this same paper coloring other images though and have been happy with it. So my experience in the different challenges staying in the lines and pressing hard enough to try to get the colors to show up isn't a difference for me. The only difference really is the size of the picture. I found that the Sakura gel pen (light green) pretty much pooled trying to color two small circles with it. It did better than I thought it would, but they wouldn't be my first choice for using unless it's just in a larger area of the picture. The Turquoise Extra Fine Sharpie did better than I thought it would too, but then they can bleed though the other side potentially. The Crazy Art Deep Plum colored in the sea horses eye was meant to color just the outer circle of the eye and, granted the tip isn't perfectly sharp, but it colored the whole eye and it looks brown not deep plum. There isn't enough of an area for the color to show up much with this cheaper/lower quality pencil. I tried a Colbalt Green Polychromo pencil (looks more turquoise green) in the bottom left corner of the picture on a few dots and lines and while these tips aren't the sharpest, it still managed to show up and color the tiny bubbles. I was surprised that it worked so well. The powdery creamy texture seemed to just "stick" immediately where I put it. Unfortunately, Polychromos are some of the most expensive pencils on the market. My small set of 36 wasn't cheap. The tips on these actually feel (and are) larger in size than the Prismacolor Verithins. So, I'm not necessarily saying buy these for this book, but you might be happy with the Polychromos. I'm not happy enough with the book to keep it anyway. The Marco Raffine Orange pencil did "OK" on staying in the lines but the waxy sheen in such a small space seemed to make it not as bright as I had hoped for. The (black wavy pen barrel) Hot Pink Extra Fine Sharpie tip seemed to sort of bend down while I was trying to color one of the specks with it. I don't recommend that style of Sharpie for the tiniest places. The standard Extra Fine Sharpie tip seems a little shorter and less likely to bend with pressure, but again there's the bleed through factor to consider. The STAEDTLER TRIPLUS FINELINER 0.3 mm light blue marker shows up well and stayed in the lines and didn't bend when using. I have no idea if it can bleed through or not though since I'm not using the actual paper in the book. Based on feel, I think the weight of the paper is the same with this Ocean book versus the older Secret Garden etc. Other reviewers have previously said that the TRIPLUS Fineliners didn't bleed through, but I just used pencils and gel pens coloring in my book, so I can't say for sure. The Violet Prismacolor Verithin in the stripes in the tail of the fish show up well and stayed in the lines, but the curvy grass and the bubbles colored in with the Bleu Violet Prismacolor Verithin didn't stay in the lines as well. These are some of the sharpest and darkest pencils out there.. But the grass was still a little bit of a challenge.

Who might like this book: IF YOU LIKE ZEN TANGLES.. DRAWING AND COLORING THEM.... You might not agree with my thoughts.. and be perfectly happy with this detailed challenge. If you have makers that work well for you that are . 3 mm and you know for a fact they won't bleed through, you might be happy. If you don't mind coloring larger sections of details within the picture all the same colors to make things easier and more realistic for staying within the lines for the pens or pencils you are using, you might be happy. If you don't need reading glasses and enjoy coloring the tiniest of spaces.. You might like this edition a lot. It might even be your favorite!

BEWARE: If you want to be able to immediately start coloring when you get this book using the same materials you used in the last books... you might find out that the details are harder than you think, to either get to show up or stay inside the lines due to the actual picture size differences. The 4th picture shows part of a picture from one of the older books versus this new size of detail. If you have bad arthritis in your hands it might not be worth the effort no matter how much you want to like this book...the devil is in the details.. LOL .. That is where I am at. :(

First the good then the bad

This is my first adult coloring book. I really do love it.

There's a nice blend of intricate, detailed areas for folks that like close up coloring and areas that are bigger for those that enjoy large area coloring. I personally like both and would be pretty disappointed if there wasn't a blend of both.

The one thing that I would like to see improvement on is the paper quality. Although the thickness is nice and my markers do not leak through, if I blend too much, the paper starts to disintegrate.

I'm using Tombow 10 pack markers in "Jelly Bean".

An Acquirers' must read

Recently, I read a great book by William Crilly and Andrew Sherman called, The AMA Handbook of Due Diligence.

I have been involved in a number of transactions, both on the buy and sell side, and I like this book because it takes a very complicated and involved process and explains it in a way that is thorough, clear, and best of all, concise. This book focuses its attention on potential buyers, and can act as either a road map for the inexperienced acquirer, or a point of reinforcement for those who have experience in acquisition due diligence.

The process of performing due diligence on a targeted acquisition has two main parts, as I see them:

1. Analysis of the company itself. It is important to understand a company's financial statements (and whether they are truly representative), its current health, growth strategy, planned product expansion/improvements, and all other facets that are specific to the company.

2. Analysis of the industry in which the company operates. The book lays out very clearly the information that is necessary to understand where a specific company fits with regards to market share, barriers to growth, etc.

In order to effectively evaluate a company and its place in the industry, Crilly and Sherman note you must know:

· Where to look

· What to ask

· What tools to use

· Who to ask

· How to test premises/answers

· Who should ask

The process, the book explains, is just as much an art as it is a science. The "art" aspect of due diligence is the style and experience to know which questions to ask and how and when to ask them. The "science" comes in the form of preparation of comprehensive and customized checklists.

There is a section at the end of the book that includes these comprehensive checklists. They are very detailed and offer a great starting point for investigation of a potential transaction. From my experience I have a good general idea of what I am looking for in a company both in terms of profitability and competitive advantage, but also with regard to risk. However, these checklists provide an excellent foundation and, if utilized, can highlight the opportunity or red flags in a potential transaction. Buy the book just for the checklists.

Overall, a great, informative read.
