Whether you know Irwin's work or not, are an art afficionado or not, this is a great read for the curious and perceptually
aware.Weschler translates visual concepts into easily understandable language. His writing is clear and insightful and never falls into boring art jargon. This is no simple task for Irwin's work which is all about looking is not necessarily transferable on paper, but ultimately Weschler's writing does it justice. Weschler gives insight not only into the mind and heart behind this work but the personality that comprises Robert
Irwin. The book is like being in a restaurant and overhearing a really interesting conversation at the adjacent table so you don't resist the urge to eavesdrop and you stay and listen 'till the end.

still forgetting

I picked up this book in 1984 because it was on a reading list for an Art History class I was taking at Oberlin College. I stayed up all night in the library that night. I couldn't put it down. My mind has never been the same.

I still often think of it,tell stories from it and give it as a gift. I always say "skip the first chapter-it gets much better." If I remember right, the book begins with a description of Irwin's perfectionism when cleaning the engine of his car. I figure that will bore my friends.

I tell my students about Irwin's many years attempt to make the perfect line, to his wife's chagrin and his painting the back side of his paintings because it matters to him. They like the story of the riots that occured in South America due to the disorientation of his discs-concave and convex-the viewers couldn't tell where the wall started and the disc stopped. I have given the book as a graduation present.

I thought about this book at the mechanic the other day. My engine is very, very dirty.

I will never forget,forgetting. Great book.

A fascinating book about creativity and the act of creation

Wechsler is a terrific biographer for Irwin. For while Irwin is himself a voluble and willing subject, Wechsler's insights into the act of creation and the journey of an artist augment Irwin's own insights in an important and illuminating way.
Having had no prior knowledge of Irwin and never having seen his work before, I still found this a fascinating book about creativity and the act of creation. I give this book as a gift frequently to those people who love and appreciate art and artists in all disciplines (painting, film, theater, photography, sculpture, pottery etc.).

About the Author
ELIAS CAIRO is a co-owner and the lead salumist at Portland, Oregon’s, Olympia Provisions, which he founded in 2009. Born in Salt Lake City to a Greek family who butchered lamb and goats utilizing Old World preparations and technique, Cairo started cooking at a young age in his father’s restaurants. He began a European apprenticeship in Switzerland at the age of twenty, where he learned classic butchery and charcuterie from renowned chef Annegret Schlumpf before moving to Portland to open Olympia Provisions.

MEREDITH ERICKSON has written for the New York Times, Elle, the National Post, Monocle, and Lucky Peach. She has also worked as an editor and production manager for various magazines, campaigns, and television programs, and was the editor of The Family Meal by Ferran Adria. She is co-author with David McMillan and Frédéric Morin of the James Beard–nominated book The Art of Living According to Joe Beef, as well as Le Pigeon with Gabriel Rucker. She lives in London.

Charcuterie Tools and Equipment

You don’t need a lot of fancy equipment and supplies to make charcuterie, but there are a few items, some essential, that will probably be unfamiliar to you. In most cases, these specialized tools will make your charcuterie making easier and ensure that your final product is safe and delicious. Any and all charcuterie materials—thermometers, casings, grinders, stuffers, smokers, smoking accessories, nets, seasoning, spices, scales—can be found at SausageMaker.com.
digital scale

You will need a digital scale that is accurate up to .5 gram. It’s also ideal if the scale can work in both grams and ounces, and if you can zero it out after placing a bowl or other vessel on the scale.
dry box

To make fermented meats you will need a room or chamber that maintains 58°F (14°C) and 83 percent relative humidity, with a very slow airflow. More on this on page 118–19.

grinder
There is something really rewarding about making a simple sausage
or pâté using a hand-grinder. But if I have a good amount of product
to make or am trying to make an emulsification, I like the ease of using an electric grinder. A KitchenAid mixer with a grinder attachment is a good starting place. It can handle a decent amount of meat. However, if you plan on making most of the recipes in this book, any one-horsepower grinder with a steel grinder head is the way to go.

knives
You can do most of the tasks required in the charcuterie chapters of this book with two knives: a deboning knife and a sausage-making knife.
The Victorinox 6-inch (15-cm) deboning knife has a nice point
on the tip and not too much flex. It will help you easily get the meat off the bones and is great for removing sinew and unwanted fat.

A sausage-making knife isn’t absolutely necessary, but it will make your life a bit easier. It looks like a small paring knife but has thin needlelike points on the opposite edge of the blade. You use this end to puncture your casing if you get any air in it during sausage making.
pâté molds and slow-cooking vessels
I love a solid, good-looking pan with a tight-fitting lid for making
pâtés and slow-cooking meats. Le Creuset is my go-to brand; they aren’t cheap and they make you look fancy, but they are also just
damn fine cooking vessels.
pH meter
A pH meter measures the pH level of your product and provides the only way to know for sure whether or not you are making a safe fermented product. If you are making fermented meats, such as salami, this is a small investment to make for serious peace of mind. I use one from Hanna Instruments that is easy to calibrate and simple to read.
smoker
You can smoke most of the meats in this book using a Weber grill or any charcoal grill with a lid. But if you plan on smoking more than once or twice a year, buy an electric smoker with a heating pad that will burn your chips without you having to stoke the coals. My smoker of choice is the Little Chief.
stuffer
Although it’s possible to stuff sausages using a grinder, I personally don’t like to; it takes a bit of time to get the feel for it. For these
recipes, I would use a stand-up piston stuffer with a hand crank and
a capacity of up to 31⁄2 pounds (1.6 kg) of meat. Far and away the
best stuffer of this size is made by a German company called Dick.

thermometer
Buy one that you can calibrate easily. At home, I use a standard
thermometer with an adjustable dial. I calibrate it by making an ice
and water slurry, then setting the proper temperature as necessary.
To calibrate your thermometer, in a large pot, mix ice and water in equal parts, then place the thermometer into the ice slurry; it should read 32°F (0°C). If it doesn’t, adjust your thermometer until it displays the correct temperature when stuck in the ice bath.

water activity meter
This piece of equipment will let you know you are making a safe dry-cured or fermented product. A water activity meter measures the unbound water content of your product, and the more unbound water you remove from a dry-cured or fermented sausage, the better your chances of reducing spoilage. The industry standard is the Pawkit made by Decagon. This amazing meter will last for a lifetime of meat making. It is only used for dry-cured items.

The Perfect Start to a Charcuterie Obsession

As a foodie, I love to stretch my culinary skills in directions where I've never traveled. I saw this book,read a few preview pages, and bought it. The first half describes how to make nearly every cured meat known to man. Starting with pate, the charcuterie journey travels through sausage, bratwurst, bacon, frankfurters and finally cured hard salamis. The second part of the book takes the meat made in the prior part and creates wonderful dishes that are served at the OP restaurant in Oregon.

Each of the recipes have been reduced to home-sized projects, where 3 pounds of raw meat are transformed in to a dozen brats or two dozen frankfurters. And the recipes are absolutely delicious! If you're over 45 years old, the franks will take you back to the ones sold in butcher shops, still connected to each other by the natural casings in which they are stuffed. The brat recipe is by far the best I've ever eaten (and I am German and have been raised on Oktoberfests). The homemade bacon will make you abandon the horrible renditions currently being offered in grocery stores around the country.

If you've ever had the desire to try to cure your own meats at home, this is a wonderful cookbook to take the charcuterie amateur to the journeyman's level. Make some sausage for your friends and watch the expression on their faces when they bite in to the best bratwurst they have ever eaten.

Great book with beautiful photography. I bought the book before my trip to Portland so I could get pumped about my visit and let me tell you, the place did not disappoint! Truly one of the highlights of my trip. Can't wait to return! Oh yeah, buy the book. :)

About the Author
Immaculée Ilibagiza is a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide that took the lives of nearly one million Tutsis. Men, women and children, including her entire family except for one of her brothers, were massacred at the hands of Hutu marauders. Immaculée found shelter at a pastor's home, where she and seven other women hid from the deadly rebel mob in a 3-by-4-foot bathroom for 91 days. During those 91 days of unimaginable suffering, Immaculée found her faith, taught herself English, and most incredibly, committed herself to a life of peace, hope and forgiveness, even for those who had murdered her family. After the Genocide finally ended, Immaculée found work at the United Nations, emigrating from Rwanda to the United States in 1998. She has gone on the receive five honorary doctoral degrees, write seven books about her faith and her life journey, and is the recipient of the Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Reconciliation and Peace. Immaculée's first book, Left to Tell; Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust (Hay House) was released in March of 2006. Left to Tell quickly became a New York Times Best Seller. To date, it has been translated into seventeen languages and has sold nearly two million copies. Immaculée's story has also been made into a documentary entitled The Diary of Immaculée. Left to Tell has received a Christopher Award "affirming the highest values of human spirit," and was chosen as Outreach Magazine's selection for "Best Outreach Testimony/Biography Resource of 2007." Left to Tell has been adopted into the curriculum of dozens of high schools and universities, including Villanova University, which selected it for their "One Book Program," making Left to Tell mandatory reading for its 6,000 students. April 7,1994 marked the beginning of the deadly Rwandan genocide. 4 months later, on July 15th was the day that signified the end of the tragic event. As the world's superpowers turn their backs, close to 1 million Tutsis, Twas, and moderate Hutus were slaughtered by Hutu government backed militia--the Interhamwe. They were murdered brutally by machetes, spears, and assault rifles while hiding in homes, churches, in the forest and on the run.

"Left to Tell" is told by Immaculee llibagiza of her horrific experiences of the genocide and how faith became front and center throughout her plight. Immaculee, born a Tutsi, was raised in a small village, where both Tutsis and Hutus lived in harmony. Her parents were well known and respected in the community. No such ethnic differences ever existed to Immaculee. That was until April 7th when the president's plane was inexplicably shot down, igniting the fuel that would begin the killing of thousands of ethnic Tutsis. The core setting of "left to tell" takes place in a small, tightly, confined bathroom in the home of a Hutu pastor. This bathroom is what would become a sanctuary for these women. Immaculee is sent to the pastor by her father, knowing that he would take her in. For 3 months, Immaculee and 6 other women were kept hidden inside the pastor's bathroom, surviving on meager scraps of left over food and a whole lot of prayer. In fact, it is prayer, faith and forgiveness that are the theme of the book. The Interhamwes' search through the home created an utter tense environment for Immaculee and the other women. But, a spiritual Immaculee, using the rosary given by her father, prayed fervently to The Lord in what ultimately gave her sanity, serenity, and strength. In the end, Immaculee was saved when she made it to safety at the french army base and eventually the RPF base in Kigali. Hearing the tragic news of the death of her parents and her two brothers left Immaculee devastated; she is indeed the only one "Left to Tell." Faith enabled Immaculee to forgive. With forgiveness, she moved on, have a family of her own, and continue to speak of her experiences and the legacy of the Rwandan genocide.

20 years have passed since the slaughtering occurred. Numerous books have been published on genocide. Testimonies such as "Left to Tell" questions our moral obligations to humanity and world peace. The responsibility lies in each of us; strengths in numbers against genocide sends a strong message to political leaders. From there, leaders will act based on pressure from the countless individuals who want to put an end on atrocities. An era in U.S history that can be used as an example is the Vietnam war. Regular, everyday people stood as a unit in protest to end the war. People from all over the country stood for a common cause. The same method can be applied to situations like this. Genocide can be something that existed in the pass and that has no place for the present or future.

A delightful woman telling her gruesome story

This is one of those books that everyone should read. It is a hard story to read because of man's unbelievable inhumanity to man being displayed like the holocaust of Rwanda. This story reaches deep into the heart of the reader evoking feelings of horror, shame, and sorrow that leads to penance that friends and neighbors can turn on one another because of prejudice and commit horrible gruesome acts of murder and mayhem that happened in Rwanda. And we cringe in shame that we turned our backs on an innocent Christ loving people who were being hunted and killed by those who hated them for no other reason than that they were just a little different. A repeat of history of the Jewish Holocaust that is so well known. However, the story tells of a beautiful young woman's faith and courage that helped her to survive by hiding in a small bathroom with 7 other women for three months while her enemies called her name just outside her window, looking for her and threatening her very existence. The story tells of that beautiful young woman learning that her family had been murdered and the strength and fortitude it took for her to put her life back together after the killing stopped. It is a story of how she held on to the faith she learned as a child and put it into practice when all else failed her and by the grace of God, she survived and lived to tell her story. Immaculee Ilibagiza is a wonderful storyteller. I have heard her speak in person and she is a beautiful speaker as well. God has greatly blessed her with the grace of telling her story and the story of Rwanda before and after the holocaust. She is very inspirational and really shares her faith and love to those who read her books or hear her tell her story. If you want to grow in your faith and your love for other people who are 'different' from you, read this book. It is powerful and life changing! You might find out those other people aren't so 'different' after all. I know I did and I thank God that he put this book into my hands. I look forward to reading other books written by this delightful Christian woman.

Should we pray more?

I absolutely loved this book. Immaculee really put a lot of detail into explaining her journey through this hard time of being in the Rwandan Holocaust. One way she got through those hard times was through pray. The way she explained pray and her deep emotion on it really made me change the way I thought of prayer. She showed that prayer can truly work and that it is one of the most beautiful things one can ever encounter. One thing that I call for those who read this book is to keep an open mind and give prayer a try and in a different way than you usually would do it. Often, all of us go through very hard times and we often think that there is no way out. Immaculee, however, went through a long lasting war and now she has a family. Every day she thought she would die, but she always looked to God and she prayed over and over again. Some of the things she talks about in this story can be very grueling and also can be hard to read. Also, before reading this book I would advise you to get some slight knowledge on Rwandan and its culture. Immaculee does give some slight facts, but knowing them before reading them really helps you get a better feel of what she is going for. Also, it explains how bad things were at that time right before the Holocaust. Finally, I would definitely suggest this book to anyone, especially church goers and those who are interested in history. It is a very touching story with much detail. Remember that I also encourage you to pray more. Just remember that it worked for Immaculee.

About the Author

Dr. Matthew Franchetti is an assistant professor of mechanical, industrial, and manufacturing engineering and the director of undergraduate studies of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Programs at The University of Toledo. He received his Ph.D. in 2003 and MBA in 2000 from The University of Toledo, has worked as an industrial engineer and technical manager for the U.S. Postal Service, and has extensive consulting experience in the automotive industry. Dr. Franchetti is a Certified Six-Sigma Black Belt from the American Society of Quality (ASQ) and has consulting and research experience with over 25 companies across the country. He has published over 60 books, articles, and conference proceedings in the field of industrial engineering.

About the Author
Rolf Schmid obtained his PhD in 1970. After post-doctoral studies in France and the USA, he joined the research laboratories of Henkel KGaA in Dsseldorf in 1972 where he became Director of the Biotechnology Laboratories. In 1987, he moved to the 'Gesellschaft fr Biotechnologische Forschung' (GBF) in Braunschweig where he headed the Division of Enzyme Technology and Natural Products Research.
In 1993, he accepted an invitation to build up the newly founded Institute for Technical Biochemistry at the University of Stuttgart. He is further in charge of the Department of Molecular Biotechnology at the Fraunhofer Institute for Membrane Science and Biotechnology in Stuttgart, and he is chairman of the IUPAC Commission of Biotechnology.
Vlada Urlacher is a young researcher and is the head of the Biocatalysis Group at the Institute for Technical Biochemistry at the University of Stuttgart.

This handy book is a wonderful reference for everyone interested in biotechnology and genetic engineering. Each technology is accompanied by easy to understand illustrations and a condensed version of the important numbers, concepts, and processes used in industrial applications. Currently, China is aggressively promoting a so-called New Urbanization, which has been regarded as one of the primary ways to build a moderately prosperous society, to address critical issues related to agriculture, rural regions and farmers, to expand domestic demand and promote industrial innovation, and to realize the China Dream. From a systematic perspective and using recently released urban data, the authors analyze the current status of New Urbanization in China and also investigate the various potential problems and obstacles to its concrete implementation. Based on the analyses and investigations, the authors propose strategic directions, paths and basic principles for China’s New Urbanization. In addition, they clearly identify the three different modes of New Urbanization, namely, the general mode, differentiated mode, and gradual mode.

Today, many scholars argue that China’s urban regions are experiencing a highly unsustainable mode of development. Chinese cities are heavily burdened by the so-called “urban diseases,” which are characterized e.g. by congested traffic, polluted water and air, and a lack of open and green spaces. Traditional urbanization, which primarily focuses on economic development, must be fundamentally reformed. New Urbanization, which focuses on integrated economic development, social integration and space/environmental sustainability, or simply put, on the quality of urbanization, has been called for to provide a potential “cure” for these urban diseases. Due to the vastness of China’s population and its rapidly growing economic, political and cultural relationships with the rest of the world, the book demonstrates that the success of this New Urbanization is critical not only to the future of urban China, but also the future of urbanization worldwide.

The book offers a valuable reference work for all researchers, graduate student and policy makers interested in China’s urban development.

About the Author

Dr. Chuanglin Fang obtained his Ph.D. in Geography in 1998 from the Institute of Geography at the Chinese Academy of Sciences-National Planning Committee. Dr. Fang is a professor of the Institute of Geographic Science and Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is also a Distinguished Professor of “Changjiang Scholars” and “Tianshan Scholars” and a doctoral faculty. Dr. Fang is currently a member of the International Society of City and Regional Planners, executive council member of the Regional Science Association (RSA) China Division, director of the Human Geography Specialty Committee of the Chinese Geographic Society, Vice President of the Chinese Urban and Rural Development Think Tank Association, executive council member of the Chinese Urban Science Association, executive council member of Chinese Urban Economics Studies, council member of Chinese Urban Planning Association, council member of China’s Urbanization Promotion Association, and council member of the China’s Geographic Society. In recent years, Dr. Fang has mainly engaged in the research and teaching of urban geography, sustainable development of urban agglomerations, the process of urbanization and its impact on the eco-environments. Dr. Fang has served and is still serving as the principal investigator of over 120 various projects funded by the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation (Key Projects), Chinese National Social Science Foundation (Key Projects), and the Chinese National “973” Projects, among many others. Dr. Fang is a very prolific scholar with a publication record of over 20 edited manuscripts or monographs, and over 330 peer-reviewed journal articles (among them, 50 are published in journals that are indexed in SCI/SSCI).

Dr. Danlin Yu obtained his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Wis-consin-Milwaukee in 2005. He is currently a tenured Associate Professor of Urban Geography and GIS at Montclair State University. Dr. Yu’s main research areas include urban and regional development planning, spatial data analysis, geographic information science and technology, geocomputation, simulation of complex systems, big data mining and analysis and its application in human and natural systems. So far, Dr. Yu has published more than 60 journal articles/book chapters in these areas in both Chinese and English, among them, more than 40 papers are published in SCI / SSCI indexed journals. Dr. Yu’s research in these areas has gained domestic and international influences. Dr. Yu has been actively using R language to write freely available spatial data analysis software packages. He is one of the co-authors of the SPGWR package that is for Geographically Weighted Regression Analysis. The package has already received a wide range of applications in the world. Since 2008, Dr. Yu was invited by the Georgia National Science Foundation as international evaluation experts. Dr. Yu currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Urban Planning and Development since 2012. From 2013 onwards, Dr. Yu was awarded the “Tianshan Scholar” title by the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and housed in Xinjiang University.

first reputable book on repairable systems

This book by Ascher is one of the earliest to concentrate on this topic. Even today there are few books on the topic. Rigdon's new book is more current. This book is referenced by Nelson in his text on recurrent events and I believe that Nelson analyzed data taken from Ascher's book.
Good first introduction but you may prefer Rigdon's book as it should be much more up-to-date.
