Perspective of a beginner artist
By meditate game and exercise
As a beginner in drawing (period), I thought a good way to learn how to draw would be to draw something I was passionate about. I always had an interest in manga/anime so learning how to draw manga was a logical step in improving as an artist. I painstakingly compared each of the various beginner books (Mark Crilley, Chris Hart, etc) and ultimately settled on this one for various reasons.

1) Sophie Chan's art style resonates with me personally. Note, her style may not resonate with you. I was very set on buying Mark Crilley's Manga book online but when I went to the bookstore, I just couldn't get into the style of the drawings I would be learning from. Mark Crilley's book seemed very good in terms of learning how to draw manga, but Sophie-Chan's art style is close to one I would like to learn myself. They seemed more "modern," or mature, if that makes sense. I realize perhaps this may seem silly, but I think it is important to like the style of the book you are learning from.

2) Very good step-by-step instructions and a decent sample size of drawings to learn from. As I was looking through the books, I realized a lot of these beginner books are not going to have it all; they won't have all of the references for anatomy, eyes, faces, expressions, poses etc that you would want. You have to pick and choose what is important for you. For me, I wanted to learn the basics, and I thought this book was the best in terms of breaking down faces, eyes, anatomy from a general perspective. I would definitely recommend buying a separate book later for areas you really want more practice or references with though.

3) good section on coloring with pencils, markers, software. Just from glancing at this section alone I decided I would be using software to color once I become proficient with basic lines and shading.

I really like this book. That said, its not perfect, and I think it could benefit from including another set of step-by-step drawings for women/men (faces, body, etc) as well as poses and anatomy.

By Brian A Jones
I'm usually too lazy to review things, but honestly this probably one of the best how to draw manga books for a beginner like me. This book is easy to follow and has a lot of step by step drawings. It tells hows to draw different head types; male, female, old, young. Shows how to draw different eye styles, hair styles, mouth. This book really basically tells everything about how to draw a character with step by step drawings. What's in this book is what I've been searching for. I tried a lot of other how to draw books. They end up being a bunch of text and not much on the step by step drawings. I'm really loving this book.

If you're a beginner beginner then this book is good to use
By Y. Rha
If you're a beginner beginner then this book is good to use, otherwise it's another how to draw art book of different head shapes and such. Style is a bit old, but still good to use. If you really want to learn how to draw, then I suggest you use books like complete guide to life drawing. I do however like how it's easy follow through. Great for young children.

Mammals of South America, Volume 2: RodentsFrom University Of Chicago Press

The second installment in a planned three-volume series, this book provides the first substantive review of South American rodents published in over fifty years. Increases in the reach of field research and the variety of field survey methods, the introduction of bioinformatics, and the explosion of molecular-based genetic methodologies have all contributed to the revision of many phylogenetic relationships and to a doubling of the recognized diversity of South American rodents. The largest and most diverse mammalian order on Earth—and an increasingly threatened one—Rodentia is also of great ecological importance, and Rodents is both a timely and exhaustive reference on these ubiquitous creatures.

From spiny mice and guinea pigs to the oversized capybara, this book covers all native rodents of South America, the continental islands of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Caribbean Netherlands off the Venezuelan coast. It includes identification keys and descriptions of all genera and species; comments on distribution; maps of localities; discussions of subspecies; and summaries of natural, taxonomic, and nomenclatural history. Rodents also contains a detailed list of cited literature and a separate gazetteer based on confirmed identifications from museum vouchers and the published literature.

Review
“The Order Rodentia is the most speciose among mammals. With close to 2,300 species, the order represents about 42% of extant mammalian species. A very diverse array of rodent radiations is evident in South American forms. Because of this, attempting a complete compendium of Neotropical rodents presents an extremely daunting task, especially considering the explosive number of new genera and species recognized during the past fifty years. Nonetheless, the editors of this volume, and the 53 contributing authors, most of whom have many years of field experience in Neotropical mammalogy, have succeeded in turning this task into a monumental achievement. . . . The book is indispensible for anyone working on or interested in South American rodents. It is a model of scholarship—representing years of effort—and will be the foundational reference on South American mammals for decades to come. The editors and authors associated with Volume 3 in this series certainly have a very tough act to follow.” (Quarterly Review of Biology)

“A must have for anyone with a serious interest in the mammals of South America!” (Ian Paulsen Birdbooker Report)

"[An] important reference volume. . . . Recommended." (R. L. Smith, West Virginia University Choice)

“Mammals of South America was initiated in 1987. Nearly three decades later, it is not hyperbolic to state that for the foreseeable future Mammals of South America, Volume 2: Rodents establishes the baseline for our understanding of this most remarkable mammalian radiation. The authors are all to be congratulated on a herculean task. Specialists in specific taxa may quibble over some treatments, but every scientist interested in the mammals of South America will want this on their shelf. And whether this reflects generosity of the publisher or the editors is not clear, but at $95 this is the best ‘bang for the buck' to appear on the market in many years. Patton and company have distilled a remarkable amount of information in an immediate classic; now it is ‘our turn’ to build on this effort and the legacy this represents.” (Douglas A. Kelt, University of California, Davis Journal of Mammalogy)

“An amazing accomplishment. Rodents are by far the most diverse mammalian order on a global scale, and South America could justifiably be called the rodent continent. Charles Darwin himself remarked on the diversity of the South American rodent fauna, which is now known to include separate radiations of several major clades that arrived on the continent at different times. Those radiations are of exceptional interest to evolutionary biologists as examples of explosive diversification and niche-filling by lineages entering new adaptive zones. Because the South American mammal fauna as a whole is (literally) a textbook example of macroevolution, South American rodents are front-and-center as objects of active research interest. The editors have done a truly remarkable job of compiling these accounts, many of which provide the first-ever continent-wide treatments of notoriously difficult groups. No other collection of authors could possibly produce a comparable work, nor is it likely that any other editors could have successfully elicited such results over the many years this volume has been in gestation. It will have a large and enduring influence on Neotropical vertebrate zoology.” (Robert S. Voss, curator in the Department of Mammalogy American Museum of Natural History)

“A state-of-the-art compendium. This is not merely an updating of information that may have appeared in a previously published volume or assortment of separate volumes, but contains much new, never-before-published material and suggestions for future research. It and its predecessor not only constitute monumental contributions to the mammalogy of South America, but to mammalogy as a whole. The Mammals of South America series will be among the top few most important contributions to mammalogy of all time.” (Ronald H. Pine, adjunct research associate Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center, University of Kansas)

An immense effort
By Martin Ubilla
I was Reading the book and it is certainly a complete updated revision of the extant neotropical rodents. The book shows a carefully and detailed treatment of each taxon at species level. Noticeable, the text includes updated molecular, ecological and also paleontological information. It is totally useful and necessary for studies on extant and also extinct rodents of South America. Selected photographs of dentition could be an excelent option for next edition!.

Excellent book!
By S. Solari
Great book, one that will have a profound impact on future studies on the diversity of this important group. The accounts update the knowledge on taxonomy, distribution and even ecology for many of the groups that were poorly covered in previous studies.

Amazon.com Review
Dr. John Sarno caused quite a ruckus back in 1990 when he suggested that back pain is all in the head. In his bestselling book, Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection, he claimed that backaches, slipped discs, headaches, and other chronic pains are due to suppressed anger, and that once the cause of the anger is addressed, the pain will vanish. Relieved Amazon.com readers call this book "liberating" and say "it sounds too good to be true, but it is true." Sarno has returned with The Mindbody Prescription, in which he explains how emotions including guilt, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem can stimulate the brain to manufacture physical symptoms including fibromyalgia, repetitive strain injuries, migraine headaches, hay fever, colitis, ulcers, and even acne. If these psychosomatic problems all sound a little Freudian, what with the repression of emotions in the unconscious, it's because Sarno unapologetically borrows from Freud for the basis of his theory and cites childhood trauma as a major source of emotional problems. He also says that his program is a "talking cure" of sorts, since patients must be convinced their pain is rooted in their emotions before healing can begin.

The book reads a bit like psychology text, with Sarno quoting from psychoanalytic theorists including Heinz Kohut and Graeme Taylor and the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition). Sarno walks through the neurophysiology of mindbody disorders, lists the symptoms of dozens of disorders that he believes are emotion-based, and offers a basic program for overcoming psychosomatic pain and illness. His recovery plan includes meditation and sometimes psychotherapy, including behavior modification, and stopping any medication or physical therapy. While Sarno's ideas seem radical, they were commonly implemented earlier in the 20th century, when psychoanalysis was at its peak of popularity, and they promise to become more accepted in our current era of alternative medical therapies and anger management. --Erica Jorgensen

Sarno is a pioneer
By Marshall Glickman, author of the Mindful Money Guide (Ballantine Books)
Last winter I was stricken with near-crippling lower-back and hip pain, which I initially attributed to a combination of basketball and hours of shoveling heavy snow. For more than a month, getting out of bed each morning was a painful, arduous affair that could take anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes. As the day wore on I would improve somewhat but was still unable to sit in a chair, let alone exercise, do yoga, or contemplate cross-country skiing or playing hoops. I sought help from doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, physical therapists, and an acupuncturist. While acupuncture was very helpful, my long-term cure came from Dr. John Sarno's book Mind Over Back Pain. In it, Sarno clearly explains how the vast majority of back, neck, and shoulder pain is caused by stress. The pain I felt wasn't imaginary or psychosomatic in the sense that there weren't actually physical symptoms, but the cause of those symptoms (the result of restricted blood flow to my lower-back region) came from not processing my emotions as emotions. My back took the brunt of what my mind wasn't fully able/ready to accept. In The MindBody Prescription Dr. Sarno moves beyond just the back to explain how and why the mind causes pain in any number of places in the body; he applies those insights to help heal other maladies such as allergies, carpal tunnel syndrome, skin problems, and chronic fatigue syndrome. The reason most of these ailments don't respond to drugs and physical manipulations is that these approaches don't address the root cause of the problem: unrecognized emotional turmoil. If you're suffering from an ailment that is difficult to diagnose or not responding finding to conventional, or even alternative cures, read Sarno's book.

No joke: I read this book, and my back pain of 20 years was gone.
By B. Price
Okay, you've got to understand: I'm no fan of "woo" or new-agey alternative medicine, and this book is not that. I'm a diehard empiricist. Even so, what I'm going to tell you might sound weird.

Everyone, EVERYONE, who has had long-term back pain needs to read this book and try it out.

I had a back injury in 1993. It hurt off and on ever since. It disrupted my life and cost me a lot -- in stress, in worry, in wasted time, not to mention in money (for doctors, pain meds, massage therapists, etc.). This pain was a significant part of my life -- will I make it through okay on a long plane trip? Will it be okay to mop the floor? If I lie on my back to read a book for half an hour in bed, will I be miserable all day tomorrow? It affected my decisions every day.

A friend mentioned this book to me, and said she totally got rid of excruciating back pain. She is not a fan of "woo" either, so I took her seriously -- and well, I'd tried everything else already. What would it hurt to buy a $10 book?

As it turns out, I'm one of those people -- a not insignificant minority, it seems -- who read the book and their back pain goes away (my friend said it took her a few months of dedicated work, and that's pretty common too--but 80-some percent of people seem to get significant, lasting relief).

I read the book about three weeks ago, and have been pain-free ever since. You might be saying "big deal" ...but I haven't had a three-week pain-free stretch in 20 years. Also, even on days when my back didn't actively hurt, certain places -- such as my shoulders -- were always stiff and sore if you touched them. That's gone too. I keep pressing on my shoulders to show myself, "Wow this doesn't hurt a bit." This thing that plagued me for 20 years is gone.

Here's what I think is good in the book:

1. Everyone knows that "stress" can affect you negatively. For example, people who suffer from chronic back pain or headaches often feel worse under stress. What I never considered, however, is that your own nervous system _creates_ physical responses. For example, when some people are embarrassed, they blush. Their blush is real -- it's not "in their head" -- and they're not blushing deliberately or in order to gain anything. Chronic back pain -- real pain, which is not "in your head" and not something you're exaggerating or fabricating -- can arise from your nervous system in the same way as a blush, whether or not there's anything "wrong" with your back. Just as a blush can arise in some people when they're embarrassed, back pain can arise in some people when they're "stressed" -- and everyone is stressed every day. If you're not stressed, you're dead, right? Not everyone blushes, and not everyone has back pain, but people's nervous systems can create physical responses from emotions.

2. Sarno points out that injuries do heal. People break a bone, it heals, and they're fine. People sprain an ankle, it heals and they're fine. Once my back injury healed (20 years or so ago), there was no reason for it to hurt anymore, other than my own nervous system using a familiar "route" to cause pain. Then the question is, Why?

3. The author points out that many people with chronic back pain are the "nice guys" of the world. People with chronic pain are often very conscientious, do-gooder, perfectionistic, or self-sacrificing types. If it's associated with a certain type of personality, that's a red flag right there that something other than an "injury" is going on. A lot of people with chronic back pain also have a history of having been abused as children. What do these two types of people have in common? They tend to deny or minimize or not notice their own feelings. They are the types to say, "Sure I'll help you move a piano at two a.m. on Christmas in a blizzard." They don't even notice that maybe a small part of themselves would rather not move the piano.

4. The author speculates that all this do-gooding and self-denial and ignoring-of-one's-own-feelings and needs (whether it's your personality type, or whether you were raised in an abusive home, or both) also creates a constant pool of underlying "rage" (his word, which he uses a lot) from the part of ourselves that doesn't want to move pianos. Here's where it gets speculative. Somehow your body transforms this unacknowledged feeling into pain (just as "somehow" the body transforms someone's embarrassment into a blush).

5. The author also speculates that the pain serves as a distractor. Of COURSE you aren't wild about moving the piano! Your back is killing you! That's a socially acceptable reason to admit to yourself that you don't want to move the piano. Of course, you'll probably move it anyway. (By the way, the author rejects the notion of "secondary gain" -- i.e., the idea that people with chronic pain use it to get certain benefits like attention or sympathy. He believes the pain serves both as a distraction from emotional pain, and an outlet for / substitute for emotional pain you're not feeling.)

6. Something I found interesting is that people in certain times and places seem to have certain mindbody disorders that are approved by their society as being "real" things with physical causes. In Victorian times there was a lot of mysterious paralysis, but it went out of fashion once people knew more about the body and that it didn't "really" work that way. In the 1990s there was a lot of carpal tunnel, even though computers were probably easier to use (easier on the wrists) than, say, old manual typewriters where you had to bang the keys. There's a whole lot of back pain today, which often lasts years beyond an injury, and which is remarkably unresponsive to treatments and surgeries, but the medical community supports the idea that an injury you sustained 20 years ago can be hurting you today, so everyone believes that chronic back pain has a physical cause, just as everyone once believed in the paralysis in Victorian times. Almost everyone (like me) can point to an "injury" that triggered their back pain, but unlike ever other injury we've ever had, it doesn't get better. It's pretty odd, once you think about it, but everyone -- from doctors to physical therapists to chiropractors to massage therapists to other people with back pain -- reinforce the idea that it's related to a physical injury and there's very little you can do about it. This belief is extremely powerful and helps perpetuate the pain.

7. What I like most of all: I read the book, I thought about all this stuff, I decided his description fit me perfectly (my personality, the type of pain, the length of time, etc. etc.), and once I knew there was likely nothing actually "wrong" with my back, it's like the game was up. My brain gave up trying to use that as a strategy. The back pain went away, including the permanent tightness in my neck and shoulders, including the shooting excruciating nerve pain down my leg for which I was being medicated.

It. Went. Away. I'm off the medication. I'm doing whatever I want. I'm lying on my back for hours every night reading my books. I'm bending however I want. Etc. No problem.

I can never do this book justice. There's a lot more, about MRIs, about people with and without bulging discs, arthritis etc., about people who are told they have to do this or that with physical therapy, "or else" (which is pretty much reinforcing the notion that there's something terribly wrong, although plenty of people have bulging discs and arthritic changes and never have a day of back pain). You just have to read it, to see whether it fits you too. If you've had back pain for years, it probably does.

Here's what I'm not wild about.

1. The book seems very psychoanalytic to me -- to me, needlessly so. It talks a lot about "rage" and you might not be a person who really perceives that you're feeling "rage" (I'm not). But on the other hand, the book "works" so I'm not sure that anyone necessarily needs to accept a psycholanalytic explanation. I'm a nice-guy self-denier who probably, if I'm really honest with myself, truly loves to help people but doesn't enjoy moving pianos at 2 a.m.

For me, all I had to do is, every time my back started to twinge, ask myself to think hard about what I'm feeling, what's bothering me. I say it to myself -- I don't even have to go around refusing to move people's pianos. I just have to say to myself something like "I really don't like getting up at 2 a.m. to move pianos. I would rather stay in bed. I wish there was some other time -- not on Christmas, not during a blizzard -- when we could move the damn piano." I just acknowledge to myself that a part of me feels that way. I also ask my brain to stop my back from hurting, and it does. Then I go about my business. But there's no need for a psychoanalytic explanation, in my opinion, any more than there's a need for a psychoanalytic explanation for a blush or a phantom limb pain.

We don't have to understand it for it to work. Gravity always "worked" whether or not we understood it. Apparently checking in with your own emotions, acknowledging them, and asking your brain to stop sending pain messages also works. I don't quite understand it, but -- like gravity -- it's very powerful.

So -- like every other idea you encounter in life: Take what works for you, and leave the rest. I've read a bunch of other good books on this topic now too, by this author and others. My favorite so far is Unlearn Your Pain by Howard Schubiner. Only the first five chapters is available on Kindle, though, and I've ordered a hard copy of the rest of the book, so I can't review the whole thing yet.

I wish every doctor who sees patients with back pain would read this book. I wish everyone with persistent back pain would read this book and give the ideas a try. I wish tons of research were being done on this phenomenon. I wish I had come across this book 20 years ago.

I can type again
By Felipe
I came across this book after dealing with crippling hand pain for weeks. It would build throughout the day and by the time the sun went down, I could do nothing except sit in my chair with ice on my hands and watch TV. As someone who makes his living programming computers and enjoys recreationally lifting weights, cooking, and other activities associated with "repetitive strain injury," naturally I was deeply concerned that I had somehow permanently injured my hands. Was this going to permanently ruin my happiness and probably my livelihood as well? I am lucky I found this book. Dr. John Sarno makes a compelling case that many physical disorders ultimately have a psychological cause and solution. My hand pain is completely gone.

People are understandably offended at the idea that their problems may very well be psychological in nature and have a psychological solution. I can identify with this, having suffered from depression and insomnia and myriad other issues in the past. But, as Sarno himself says in the book, just because they are psychological does not mean they are not real. It is no more your fault that you are suffering than it is a cold-sufferer's fault that he is sick for "letting" a virus into his body. Your symptoms are real. You are not suffering by choice. But once you become aware of the underlying process, you now have the choice of relief. That is the lightbulb moment in this book.

I was very turned off by the use of Freudian ideas throughout the book, as well as the lack of scientific studies on Sarno's conclusions. But having read the book and successfully applied the ideas within, I will liken his use of somewhat sketchy psychological ideas to a map of the Earth. On the most common two-dimensional projection of the Earth, the Mercator, Greenland is the same size as Africa despite being 14 times smaller. If we can't map a sphere correctly, how can we even begin to map out the brain, an organ which we do not come close to understanding? The only way we can currently judge a map of the brain is if it gets us where we need to go. This is a map that will get you where you need to go, if you let it. I look forward to the mechanism of action of mindbody disorders being revealed and the treatment becoming mainstream, but in the meantime, I am elated that my hands work again and strongly recommend the purchase of this book.

Good Rental Price
By Proper Bostonian
Good rental price for a full semester, considering it's about $90 at best to buy new everywhere I looked. Amazon gives a good amount of time to return it-they seem to be in sync with when semesters generally end.

Mine still has the access code unused (score!) and moderate highlighting. Amazon doesn't guarantee that the access code will be unused/unpeeled-if your professor requires this then look elsewhere because it's luck of the draw. I also like that you can return at end of semester with free shipping label from your account. As for this book, it's pretty dry-but required so no choice. #nursingschool

The worst. Literally the worst.
By Andrew Nolasco
Literally the WORST textbook I've ever had in my life. So much useless fluff that you don't need to be reading. I feel like 99% of this book was just a complete waste of time and brain space. "There is no I in team, and this is very important to note" actual quote out of the book. If you have to get this book for your class, I'm sorry. I could probably write a whole other book about how terrible this book is. It even said Freud was alive during the 18th century... ARE YOU SERIOUS???

The Book of Drugs: A Memoir, by Mike Doughty

Mike Doughty first came to prominence as the leader of the band Soul Coughing then did an abrupt sonic left turn, much to the surprise of his audience, transforming into a solo performer of stark, dusky, but strangely hopeful tunes. He battled addiction, gave up fame when his old band was at the height of its popularity, drove thousands of miles, alone, across America, with just an acoustic guitar. His candid, hilarious, self-lacerating memoir, The Book of Drugs—featuring cameos by Redman, Ani DiFranco, the late Jeff Buckley, and others—is the story of his band’s rise and bitter collapse, the haunted and darkly comical life of addiction, and the perhaps even weirder world of recovery.

From Booklist
Rock musician Doughty, former leader of the band Soul Coughing, makes clear from the start that he loves drugs, especially heroin. He just doesn’t like what they do to him, and at this point in his life, he has no desire to try them again. Cognizant of the James Frey syndrome, Doughty admits that he has changed names in an effort to avoid problems even as he asks, “Isn’t memory itself an act of imagination?” In this conversational, rambling, and picaresque memoir—one without chapter breaks—Doughty recalls a childhood and adolescence where after his sophomore year in high school, he attended an experimental college (“a weird school,” he says) in Massachusetts. He recalls, too, his various druggie activities, including dancing in a club under the influence of acid and snorting heroin in a basement dressing room. Although Doughty’s many drug escapades become a bit redundant after a while, anyone with an interest in pop culture generally and rock music in particular should appreciate this insider’s account of life on the road. --June Sawyers

Review

Publishers Weekly, 10/3/11
“Hardly your typical rock star memoir. Doughty is brutally honest about life as an addict…Bringing the writing skill that he has crafted to his underground poetry, magazine articles, and songs, Doughty conveys his message with both despair and humor…A compelling look at one man’s struggle to come to terms with the much-discussed connection between addiction and art.”

New York Daily News, 10/28/11“The leader of the New York band Soul Coughing comes clean about the local music scene as well as his (semi) undiminished love of the high.” TheRumpus.net, 10/20/11
“Doughty’s life, as chronicled in these pages, is not so much a revelation for its narrative arc (kid makes the big time, starts in with the dope, the band breaks up, kid is redeemed), as it is for the astonishingly vital, energized, and natural voice contained in its pages, one which never once had a ghost writer presiding over it, likewise its acerbic and sometimes lacerating honesty.”
Boston Globe, 11/11/11“Engrossing and extremely candid.” Seattle Weekly, 11/9/11“A salacious memoir.” Billboard.com, 12/7/11“Chronicles his treacherous, intoxicated years as frontman of Soul Coughing in the 90s, through his transition into a fruitful (sober) solo career, with plenty of self-deprecating humor, band squabbles, music biz debauchery, and notable cameos from Jeff Buckley, Dave Matthews and Ani DiFranco and along the way.”
Library Journal, December 2011“[A] soul-baring memoir…Much more than a musician's autobiography, this is a tale about the resurgence of the human spirit; Doughty captures a little bit of all of us in his journey. Recommended.” Jambands.com, 12/16/11
“Not only an open look by Doughty at his past addiction problems, but a smart, funny, and honest view of the late 80s/early 90s NY music scene, Doughty’s years with the band Soul Coughing, and what it was like to reach the other side of a very dark place. Don’t for a moment think that Mike Doughty has written your typical I-got-clean-and-now-I’m-above-all-that sort of book."
Relix, January/February 2012“Love stories to drugs that [Doughty] had to quit. Suddenly, the fine points of ‘The Huffer and the Cutter,’ about love between damaged people, takes on an even deeper meaning.” Booklist, 12/28/11“[A] conversational, rambling, and picaresque memoir…Anyone with an interest in pop culture generally and rock music in particular should appreciate this insider’s account of life on the road.” The Arts Desk (UK), 12/29/11
“A thrillingly lucid and bravely honest memoir.”
Boston Globe, 1/10/12“What’s shocking and fresh about The Book of Drugs is how vividly it captures the psychic stasis of addiction…Much of the memoir’s appeal resides in Doughty’s lacerating candor.” Black Book, 1/10/12“A refreshingly genuine rock 'n' roll memoir, with the typical rise and fall of a rock star you might find as the plot of a musical biopic…But it's also a poetic look at the music industry in the late '90s, a seemingly mythical time before the rise of .mp3s and iPods.” Interview, 1/11/12“A layered memoir…A musical person with a passion for prose, Doughty's writing is self-deprecating and honest.” Ink 19, January 2012 “Not your typical memoir…Fascinating, especially for a Doughty fan…This will put some clarity into the man behind the music.” You’re Beautiful, New York, January 2012
“Full of succulent period errata, much like Patti Smith's Just Kids and Eileen Myles' Inferno.  We go to legendary places and meet legendary people along the way…Like Smith and Myles, Doughty recreates downtown Manhattan in his formative moment with adroit and insouciant deftness. One comes to see and know as he has. It is a deeply enchanting backdrop for a deeply disenchanting behind-the-scenes.”
PopMatters.com, 1/17/12“The Book of Drugs can simultaneously be a rock ‘n’ roll tell-all, harrowing drug account, and a uniquely personal tale all in one, without ever feeling like it’s playing any of those angles deliberately. The reason why The Book of Drugs works is because it’s absolutely unflinching…A highly entertaining read…All in all, The Book of Drugs is an outstanding book. It’s a litany of stories filled to the brim with personality, wit, and humor…One of the best books you’ll read this year.”                                 Addiction Inbox (blog), 1/14/12“It seems almost unfair that a talented singer/songwriter like Doughty should also turn out to be a good writer, but there you have it. The Book of Drugs is informative but not confessional, rock-snarky but tempered with a round of amends. It is also whip-smart and bitterly funny.”

Salon.com, 1/26/12
“The unspoken rule of rock ‘n’ roll memoirs—especially ones about drug-addled players who get clean—is that the author tends to mend fences rather than sling mud. Mike Doughty: not so much. In The Book of Drugs, the former Soul Coughing frontman writes with a lacerating candor about his family, his narcotic and sexual excesses, the idiocy of the music industry, and, most of all, his former band mates.”

Penthouse, February 2012“Doughty strips away the glamour many people associate with the rock-star life, and his sharp writing reinvigorates even the most overdone clichés about recovery.” The Daily, 1/22/12“Being a Soul Coughing fan, or a fan of Doughty's solo career, isn't required to enjoy reading The Book of Drugs...The warts-and-all approach of The Book of Drugs works.” New York Post, 1/29/12"[A] riveting new memoir." Tucson Citizen, 1/23/12“Brutally honest, stark, cringe-worthy, and unexpectedly witty…This is not your typical rocker-hits-the-skids memoir but one that pulls no punches, and is so candid and brutally honest, it almost sucks the oxygen out of the room…I hope there will be a sequel to this book. It is that satisfying.” The Rogovy Report, 1/30/12
“A funny, haunted tale in which no one—bandmates, producers, fans, A&R reps, fellow musicians such as Jeff Buckley and Redman, and least of all Doughty himself—is spared.” Rolling Stone, 2/16/12“Doughty is a funny, unsparing writer, and if he often comes across as a prick (like most everyone else here), he’s a deeply self-aware one; his eventual salvation – qualified, full of doubts – feels as real and lived as they come.” MTVHive.com, 1/30/12“The Book of Drugs has many of the staples we’ve come to expect from a rock ‘n’ roll tell-all. There are stories about consuming ridiculous amounts of illegal narcotics, and having ridiculous amounts of raunchy sex with people you’ve just met, and hating your bandmates for not respecting your awesomeness, and then kicking the drugs and meaningless sex and stupid band and realizing what’s important in life…But The Book of Drugs manages to transcend its own clichés…Doughty’s misadventures are weirdly relatable, even if you’ve never spent a small fortune on heroin or had sex with strangers in multiple time zones.” Wisconsin State Journal, 2/1/12“Candid and unsparing, and better written than most of its ilk…A powerful read.” This Week in New York, 2/1/12
“A no-holds-barred look at that old music cliché, sex, drugs, and rock and roll.” Blurt Online, 2/6/12“Written in more of a conversational collection of anecdotes, remembrances and one-off stories, though largely chronologically, Doughty eschews the traditional chapter by chapter story in the life of, opting for a more original take on the standard rock memoir…His time in Soul Coughing and his relationship with drugs clearly made for some fascinating stories.”  The Nervous Breakdown, 2/6/12“The Book of Drugs reads like a late night conversation, Doughty’s candor charged by a quick wit and a merciless sense of humor that bring an electric edge to the stories within his story…The Book of Drugs is much more than Doughty’s memoir, however—it is a bare-knuckle...

Great read, but...
By Barry Oners
I think Doughty is a 5 star writer but I decided I wanted to change this review upon realizing that this book kinda made me really dislike him. Essentially this is page after page about how he got hurt feelings and about how unstable his bandmates were, a shocking display of self-unawareness after admitting right off the bat that the drugs may have affected his memory. To sum things up - Doughty meets Jeff Buckley, gets jealous of him, for the women that sleep with him and his god-like status among his followers, then spends the next decade of his life trying to capture that with his band Soul Coughing. Thus, he gets increasingly annoyed with his bandmates, who demand equal pay (which they didn't always get, by the way) and equal credit. I've read both Doughty's account and De Gli Antoni's account and they both actually line up quite well, but I must say that when you listen to the discs, De Gli Antoni's is the one that rings more true. "A band is only as good as its drummer", he says, and Soul Coughing had a really great one. Soul Coughing was a band effort - they needed all four members to work, and Doughty's freestyling and jangly guitar scratching complimented what everyone else was doing. Meanwhile, Doughty really just wanted to be a solo act all along it seems, and would get upset that the band photos didn't highlight him, and that he wasn't being featured enough (for example, demanding a new video be made for "Circles" because the excellent cartoon video didn't make it clear who the singer was). Then, Doughty became a solo act, and you know what, he did alright. He's a better songwriter now. The great thing about Soul Coughing was that they could make magic whether a song was really there or not (and really, Doughty, you think you deserve sole credit for "Super Bon Bon"?)

I don't want to belabor the point about Soul Coughing, as Mike does that for you - literally half the book is him ranting about people he cannot even bring himself to name (the other half is him ranting against everyone else, including you, the fan, who just paid $15.99 to read Doughty's book on a topic that he insists you do NOT bring up). Essentially it's a guy who admits he was a junkie for nearly a decade telling us all how sure he was that everyone else was the problem. He talks about how him not getting his way led to him just not showing up to the studio, and yet he's baffled as to why his bandmates didn't respect him more. He goes on and on about how big Soul Coughing could have been if only they'd listened, and yet his solo career, where he can finally do whatever he wants, has seen diminishing returns, and only produced one song a non-fan might know (Looking at the World From the Bottom of a Well), if they heard it in a Starbucks or something. He gleefully lists all his bandmates failures post-Soul Coughing (they're all quite busy - Mark scores Warner Herzog films and Steinberg has played on a zillion records since), but doesn't dwell on the fact that he struggled mightily to find a record label to release his solo albums, attributing that to the fact that he was balding. Yes, Mark, Sebastian, and Yuval did not have the same success after Mike broke up the band, but neither did Mike himself! If Soul Coughing really was all about you, why did the fans abandon you en masse when you went to your current acoustic set up? The worst part is that he paints his bandmates as these totally unrealistic people, whose only goal in life was apparently to make Mike Doughty suffer and ruin his albums. Of course they wanted credit for Ruby Vroom - the songwriting there is virtually non-existent! Of course, he also takes credit for all the "freaky" parts of the band that people liked - but if you compare Horse Tricks and his similar attempt Dubious Luxury, the difference is night and day. I can't even make it through one of Doughty's "freaky" compositions. Still, a lot of it is just quibbling - there have been bands torn apart because bandmates started sleeping with each others wives, and here is Doughty spending a page complaining that De Gli Antoni took credit for a sample that he's "pretty sure" he came up with. That one of the guys broke his headphones and left him on his bed. That they got sick of each other on the tour bus. Yep. That's where the anger has festered these last 12 years. This is what made Doughty repeatedly compare himself to an "abused spouse" (a pretty offensive comparison, wouldn't you think? It's not like these guys even got physical!)

Still, as far as books that make the reader dislike the author go, this is a pretty good one. Doughty's a good writer. Lets just hope his next book isn't about himself.

Good read, but be warned.
By Justin
This episodic but roughly chronological memoir clips along at an addictive pace. It's very honest and unsparingly self-critical, and portrays a world of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll so squalid and numbingly repetitive you'll be glad you're not a rock star after all. In one especially memorable passage, Doughty recounts how, at the height of his addiction, he was so unhealthy that it took 90 minutes just to walk across the street to the ATM and back.

Alongside the addiction story, Doughty delves into the astonishingly toxic personal politics in Soul Coughing. Most band-infighting narratives are about friendships gone sour, but here we start with strangers who disliked each other from the first rehearsal, yet somehow slogged through three albums and several tours. The "Let It Be" -era Beatles seem positively chummy by comparison.

However, as some other reviewers have noted, the book takes a surprisingly off-putting turn near the end, when Doughty unleashes several pages of white-hot hatred at not just his former bandmates, but at the SC music itself -- and voices more than a little resentment of fans who bring it up. He talks about playing SC songs live in the past, but getting angry when people cheered for them(!), and portrays fans who request those songs or mention the band to him as being a nuisance at best and belligerent tormentors at worst. This may come as a surprise to fans have heard him play SC songs live as recently as a few years ago, and readers who were just told, throughout the first 4/5 of this book, that Doughty wrote all the SC material singlehandedly and wasn't properly credited for it.

It's obvious he doesn't plan on ever playing SC music again, and that's understandable, although why the total ban didn't set in until a dozen years after the breakup remains unexplained. But to want to purge his fan base of all affection for it, or push away current fans who still like it, seems neither realistic nor fair. As Doughty puts it: "When someone says they like Soul Coughing, I hear f--- you." More than a few longtime fans, who have greatly enjoyed and supported his many solo albums, may hear that statement as a "f--- you" right back.

A Memoir About Hating Everyone
By With A C
I had a funny reaction to this book - I was a fan of Soul Coughing, and have enjoyed Doughty's solo stuff, as well. And now I'm sorry about that. My enjoyment of Mr. Doughty's music would probably have continued unabated, but now that I know he thinks I'm an idiot, I'm going to have a hard time ponying up cash for his work, or enjoying what he produces.
The book is well-written, it carries the reader along, and some of the prose is gorgeous. However, after finishing it, it occurred to me that no one ended up looking anything but awful in this book. It starts off with a giant "f*** you" to his family, continues on with a "f*** you" to the New York music scene, then a "f*** you" to the band, the record label, the A&R rep, the manager, and everyone involved with the band, all underscored with a really notable amount of self-loathing. Not to mention a GIANT "f*** you" to the fans of Soul Coughing or anyone who ever enjoyed the music of Soul Coughing, who seem to deserve a special extra helping of contempt from the author. Then the book moves on to the recovery story, which I found to be also underscored with a lot of loathing from the author - not just of himself, but of everyone around him, though there were bright points here and there about people who might not be as awful as everyone else. When the book moved on to stories about his travels, the fact that everyone (including the author) was portrayed as a total jerk......well, that's really distracting, to read about someone visiting amazing places and seeing amazing sights and being sober and recovering and still being so full of self-loathing that it spills out onto everything and everyone around him.
After finishing this book and having had some time to think about it, I'm truly sorry I read it. It seems like Mike Doughty hates everyone he's ever come into contact with, including himself, and it's going to be hard to listen to his music without remembering that. It's especially hard to enjoy the music of someone who seems to hold his fans in such utter and total contempt. The book gets three stars because it's a compelling read, but a reluctant three stars, because I regret reading it.

This is the first edition since 1965 to combine More's Latin text with an English translation, and the first to provide an accurate Latin text. From the Back Cover
First published in Latin in 1516, Thomas More's Utopia is one of the most influential books in the Western philosophical and literary tradition and one of the supreme achievements of Renaissance humanism. This is the first edition of Utopia since 1965 (the Yale edition) to combine More's Latin text with an English translation, and also the first edition to provide a Latin text that is at once accurate and readable. The text is based on the early editions (with the Froben edition of March 1518 as copy-text), but spelling and punctuation have been regularised in accordance with modern practices. The translation is a revised version of the acclaimed Adams translation, which also appears in Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought. The edition, which incorporates the results of recent Utopian scholarship, includes an introduction, textual apparatus, a full commentary and a guide to the voluminous scholarly and critical literature on Utopia.
