About the Author
Matthew Morris has worked with the Oracle database since 1996 when he worked in the RDBMS support team for Oracle Support Services. Employed by Oracle for over eleven years in support and development positions, Matthew was an early adopter of the Oracle Certified Professional program. He was one of the first one hundred Oracle Certified Database Administrators (version 7.3) and was also in the first hundred to become an Oracle Certified Forms Developer. In the years since, he has upgraded his Database Administrator certification for releases 8i, 9i, 10G and 11G, added the Application Express and the Oracle SQL Expert certifications and is an Oracle Advanced PL/SQL Developer Certified Professional. Outside of Oracle, he has CompTIA certifications in Linux+ and Security+. Matthew is an experienced Database Administrator and PL/SQL developer and has been creating Web applications with Oracle Application Express since the early days of its release. He is currently employed as a Database Engineer with Computer Sciences Corporation developing enterprise applications.

Good book for identifying the scope of the exam.

This book was very handy in drawing the boundaries/scope of the exam. Of cause it didn't go into much details on the topics, and as stated by the author, it does not teach you the language. But it filled a much needed void that the exam had, a study guide.

PL/SQL has a very large scope as a programming language and even if you take the exam topics, the oracle documentation as well as the most popular text books on the language provide very comprehensive information on them. It was really difficult to come to terms on how much was covered in the exam.

It would have been ideal if the book contained more examples and some exercises. But even without them, the book is very useful.

Excellent supplemental to studying

I credit passing 1z0-144 in large part to this book. It provides an excellent outline to all the topics covered in the test, which helped me determine where I needed more studying. Though no substitute for reading the Oracle docs, for hands-on practice, etc., it is ideal for that last push before taking the test.

Very good general driving text, no info on Police driving however

This book functions as what most Americans would consider a Drivers Ed. text book. It is a very good one, but it is specific to the UK (which side of the road is driven on, signs, etc). It goes into much greater detail on the physics of a vehicle in motion then most texts of the sort would do, and does a good job of explaining this material. The book does not have any information relating to high speed or pursuit driving, and states that these are subjects best learned with an instructor. As a general text about driving it's a 5 star book, those looking for information about police driving (as I was) look else where such as Bob Bondurant on Police and Pursuit Driving.

I read this book and thought it was funny and childish. I asked my husband to read it to our girls, who were 7 and 9 at the time, as part of the bedtime routine. My husband put alot of inflection into reading aloud. It was great to hear the laughter from all 3 of them. I found the book again and bought it again. My oldest is 15 and can not wait to read it again. She has to clean her room first. She is busy cleaning.

Fun Book!

We're big Daniel Pinkwater fans in the house. My husband read this one as a child, and we picked it up this summer so my son could read it (age 7). It's ridiculously silly, full of adventure, and was up to the usual Pinkwater standards.

One of Pinkwater's best. This is a must read for every 10 year old with a sense of humor. Actually, it also entertains the adult who happens upon it. I also recommend "Slaves of Spiegel", "Fat Men in Space", and "Alan Mendelsohn, Boy from Mars".

Arguing that this series of hostilities, which included both civil and external war, amounted to one long conflict―The Thirty Years War―Craig Etcheson demonstrates that there was one constant, churning presence that drove that conflict: the Khmer Rouge. New findings demonstrate that the death toll was approximately 2.2 million people―about half a million more than commonly believed. Detailing the struggle of coming to terms with what happened in Cambodia, Etcheson concludes that real justice is not merely elusive but may, in fact, be impossible for crimes on the scale of genocide.

This book details the work of a unique partnership, Yale University's Cambodian Genocide Program, which laid the evidentiary basis for the forthcoming Khmer Rouge tribunal and also played a key role in the international advocacy necessary for the tribunal's creation. It presents the information collected through the Mass Grave Mapping Project of the Documentation Center of Cambodia and reveals that the pattern of killing was relatively uniform throughout the country. About the Author

Craig Etcheson is a principal founder of the Documentation Center of Cambodia. He works with governments, international organizations, and NGOs in the search for ways to help heal nations that are recovering from genocide and other extreme violence. He has been a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, and the University of Southern California. He is the author of several book-length treatises on extreme conflict, including The Rise and Demise of Democratic Kampuchea (1984).

A unique insider's perspective of the Khmer Rouge era

This book focuses on the long struggle to bring the Khmer Rouge accountable for the auto-genocide that occurred in Cambodia in the late 1970s. Unlike most books on Cambodia, it does not focus on the history of the killings but how different actors in Cambodian society have dealt with the aftermath. It provides a very useful description of the Documentation Center for Cambodia's work collecting information on the killings. The last chapters discuss the politics behind bringing the Khmer Rouge leaders to justice. This is particularly interesting given the fact that the current tribunal has just begun hearings.

Etcheson tells this story as a true insider, as indeed he is. Not only has he been a longstanding advocate for justice for the Khmer Rouge, he now serves with the Khmer Rouge Tribunal he helped establish. As such, his writing is tinged with passion for his cause. Well worth the read for Cambodia scholars or those interested in seeking justice for mass human rights violations.

Rudolf's book is the best one on Gnosis after Jonas.

It is comprehensive, steeped in the sources and objective which is rare in a field where personal covinctions often interfere with narrative. There are some minor works or subjects which I wanted to see better covered but, nevertheless, it is an outstanding achievement. It helped me a lot to penetrate the world of ancient Gnosticism and finally to write and defend a doctoral thesis on it. It will be published in 2000, alas, in Bulgarian. It also stimulated me to begin researching the influence of Gnosticism through the ages which is enormous but much neglected.

A "Must Have" for Modern Gnostics

GNOSIS: The Nature & History of Gnosticism by Kurt Rudolph is one of the ultimate resources on the subject of gnosis. A scholar of the very finest caliber, Rudolph meticulously explores the earliest origins of a loosely connected spiritual movement that can be historically traced back to at least the year One Common Era. Within this context the author alludes to the fact that Pagans, not just Christians, were associated to the Gnostic view of a universe under the domination of the Demiurge (Satan or exploitation). The author describes the inevitable conflict between the myriad Gnostics sects and the Church Establishment. The Gnostics were concerned with individual liberation, while the early Church was obsessed with imposing a rigid fundamentalism and considered the Gnostics to be the worst heretics-and dealt with them accordingly. The author also demonstrates the fact that Gnostics were involved in astrology, numerology & magic. He also states the compatibility of modern Gnosticism and socialism

A Good Overview

For someone looking for a reasonably detailed and well-written introduction to Gnosticism, this is an excellent starting point. Covering most of the major Gnostic phenomena, it covers a difficult topic in a way that is pretty easy to get into.

Sometimes, it is a bit "wordy" and heavy going, though overall, it is an excellent intro.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.
