About the Author
Bo Brinkman is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He has received best paper awards for his work in computer ethics and algorithms and was published in the prestigious Journal of the ACM. His recent work on the ethical implications of augmented reality has been featured on the blogs of the Chronicle of Higher Education, Fast Company, and Read Write Web. Alton F. Sanders began his computer career in 1963. He has worked as a software developer, software consultant, system manager, and university professor. Sanders has received numerous teaching awards, and in addition to his technical publications, has published papers exploring computer ethics and software engineering issues with an ethical impact. He is now Professor Emeritus of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

See this book. See this book make you crack up! Fun, fun, fun!

This book is hilarious. It not only skewers Dick and Jane reading primers quite nicely (though, let's face it, most kids would seize up with some of the longer words in this parody) but also pokes fun at the Original Series and many of its clichés. It also was surprisingly substantial in its content, and is drawn well too. Fans who grew up with Star Trek will have a blast with it, and it was obviously done with love for the material and a tremendous sense of fun.

My wife and I liked it. I read it aloud and the text worked well. The art is spot-on.

If the book had been a little longer I would have given it five stars.

Good story

This is a higher level continuation of "El viaje de su vida." A couple of high school students end up stranded in Puerto Rico with no money. It's a little longer than "El viaje de su vida." I very much like this series, especially the ones by Lisa Ray Turner and Blaine Ray.

My students loved it

My Spanish students are often frustrated that their vocabulary level just isn't quite up to the ability of reading "real" Spanish Literature, but both the Level 2 and Level 1 students are able to study a short list of vocabulary and work through an interesting story that keeps them wanting to turn the pages and discuss it the next week in class. I thought it was QUITE well done.

13 Hours - a compelling read

A riveting account of what happened during the "battle of Benghazi". The book is hard to put down. It is the account of what happened during the attack on our diplomatic outpost and CIA annex by the heroic defenders of the compounds. The book describes what the State Department's security team experienced during the attack. The book contains little of the political back and forth just the facts of what happened during the attack. The book reads like a great thriller novel. The story shows heroes still exist in this world of ambivalence.

I loved the background of Benghazi's history in the beginning and how it transitioned to the events of 2012. The fast paced, down to earth account given by the survivors made me swell with pride that there are good guys out there, willing to take on evil to protect others and what we should all hold dear. I would recommend this book to anyone who is on the fence about what happened that horrible day and hope they would see how everything they see in 1 minute sound bytes is not always the whole story.

The brave surviving defenders who largely relate this sad event clearly want it this way

Factual account of the desperate fight the defenders of our Benghazi outposts undertook. I bought this book 9/10 at Costco and finished early this morning 9/12. The author makes it quite clear this is purely a factual account - no politics. And there shouldn't be any. The brave surviving defenders who largely relate this sad event clearly want it this way.

Kudos to the author. And Bravo Zulu to the defenders.

About the Author

John W. Creswell, PhD, has been a professor of educational psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1978. In addition to teaching at the university, he has authored numerous articles on mixed methods research, qualitative methodology, and general research design and 12 books, many of which focus on types of research designs, comparisons of different qualitative methodologies, and the nature and use of mixed methods research. His books are translated into many languages and used around the world. For the last five years, Dr. Creswell served as a co-director at the Office of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research at the University of Nebraska, which provided support for scholars incorporating qualitative and mixed methods research into projects for extramural funding. He served as the founding co-editor of the Sage Journal of Mixed Methods Research, and as an adjunct professor of family medicine at the University of Michigan where he assisted investigators in the health sciences and education with research methodology for National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation projects. He also served extensively as a consultant in the health services research area for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Creswell was a Senior Fulbright Scholar to South Africa and in 2008 lectured to faculty at five universities on education and the health sciences. In 2012 he served as a Senior Fulbright Scholar to Thailand. Recently he served as a co-leader of a national working group developing guidelines for mixed methods research for NIH. He lives with his wife, Karen, in Lincoln, Nebraska.  

 

Vicki L. Plano Clark (Ph.D., University of Nebraska-Lincoln) is an assistant professor in the Quantitative and Mixed Methods Research Methodologies concentration of Educational Studies at the University of Cincinnati.  Her teaching focuses on foundations of research methodologies and mixed methods research, including a two-semester mixed methods sequence and special topics courses.  As a methodologist specializing in mixed methods research, her scholarship aims to delineate useful designs for conducting mixed methods research, examine procedural issues associated with these designs, and consider larger questions about the contexts for the adoption and use of mixed methods.  She has also co-authored several books with John W. Creswell including Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research (SAGE, 2007, 2011), The Mixed Methods Reader (SAGE, 2008), and Understanding Research: A Consumer’s Guide (Pearson Education, 2010, 2015).  She was the founding Managing Editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research and currently serves as an Associate Editor.  In 2011, she co-led the development of Best Practices for Mixed Methods in the Health Sciences for NIH's Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research.  She is a founding co-editor of SAGE’s Mixed Methods Research Series.

            As an applied research methodologist, Vicki also engages in research and evaluation projects on a wide array of topics such as the management of cancer pain, the identity development of STEM graduate students, the professional development of teachers of Chinese, and the effectiveness of school reform initiatives.  Before joining the University of Cincinnati, she was the director of the Office of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research, a service and research unit that provides methodological support for proposal development and funded projects at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.  Originally trained in physics, she spent 12 years developing innovative curricular materials for introductory physics as the Physics Laboratory Manager at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

This book was exactly what I needed for the methods section in my thesis proposal. I recommend this book to any graduate student needing to know about mixed methods research in depth. It even provides examples on how to write purpose statements depending on which specific mixed methods design type that you use.

About the Author
Demetra George, halds a B.A. in Philosophy and M.A. Classics, received the 2002 Marion D. March Regulus Award for Theory and Understanding. A practitioner of astrology for over 30 years, she specializes in asteroids, archetypal mythology, and traditional astrology. She is also coauthor of the best-selling workbook Astrology for Yourself and Asteroid Goddesses with Douglas Bloch. Ms. George is the Director of THEMA: Foundations in Astrology which offers integrated programs and traveling symposia for individuals and small groups in the history, mythology, and techniques of Hellenistic and Archetypal astrology.

Douglas Bloch is a counselor and teacher and the author of ten books, including his inspirational self-help trilogy Words that Heal and I Am With You Always.

Astrology students need this book

How this book ever got out of print for a minute I do not know. All students of astrology need Demetra in their bookshelf and on their desk. An understanding of the asteroid goddesses is a way to add an entire new dimension to understanding the natal and other charts. Demetra understands the ladies in myth, history, and in the psyche, and she details, amazingly well, their meaning in the chart.
5 stars except that I wish the other asteroids were included ... The four main goddesses are here and understanding them is enough of a project for awhile ... but I wish we'd gotten the entire sisterhood ... probably they are around here somewhere ...
The great thing Demetra has done is add the presence of feminine values and concerns to the horoscope. Supporting the Moon, the asteroid goddesses have as their interest, relationship, hearth, romance, adventure, protection, nurture. No natal chart should be without them.

The quality of book compromised by the amount of filler.

I REALLY liked this book EXCEPT for the fact that the information on the minor asteroids was disappointingly skimpy. The author provided an excellent amount of information about the major asteroids, and so it was surprising to see how little information was given on the minor asteroids. If the author did not have enough information yet about the minor asteroids, I would rather she had left out the "junk" and had a thinner (and less expensive) volume. By "junk", I'm referring to the pages and pages of celebrities' asteroid placements. The endless lists about celebrities added nothing to the reader's enlightenment on the subject, and I don't share our culture's fascination with celebrities. If the filler was the publisher's decision - perhaps to leave the opportunity for another book (sale), then I am very disappointed in that publisher. Publishers of astrology books usually give fair value for the price of their books. Had I seen the book (in a book store), I would have been conflicted about buying it. The topic is new and fascinating, but there is just too much filler. As it now stands, the book is really worth about $13 or $14 at most. If the author were to remove the filler and add the same quality of information about the minor asteroids as she has for the major asteroids, the book would be worth the current price.

an instant classic

Demetra George's contribution to the field of Astrology is monumental, to say the very least. This material came along at a time when women were actively seeking new roles in society and thus it is evidence of the divine inspiration reflected in the ancient Hermetic maxim: "As above, so below; As without, so within." This is absolutely a seminal work of gigantic implications.

This material forces the modern astrologer to grapple with complex socio-political questions. If Astrology is truly a symbolic language to describe and give meaning to our Lives, should not the stories we populate with this language reflect the populations we see in our everyday lives? The facts are that the 10 planet modern astrology which became the norm in the last century has a 4:1 bias toward male figures!

After the discovery of Uranus in the Age of Enlightenment -and the subsequent pronouncement that all MEN are created equal -we had the discovery of Ceres and the other Goddesses. Ever since then, we have been collectively struggling to re-integrate the splintered Feminine via women's rights and minority rights. It has been a long slow slog, however.

Believe it or not, it wasn't until the 1970's that anyone came up with the idea that men and women could actually have qualities of the opposite gender (and still be OK). In the mid-1970's Sandra Bem revolutionized psychology with a new personality theory. Instead of masculinity and femininity traits being seen in the traditional light as dichotomous endpoints of a single continuum, Bem proposed they be seen independently and that individuals may possess varying degrees of each trait regardless of biological sex.

Interestingly, it was in this same decade that modern astrologers began compiling ephemeredes of the asteroid Goddesses. By the 1980's Demetra George's seminal work Asteroid Goddesses made possible in astrology the movement toward balance which psychology was struggling to embrace. If you include these 4 exiled Olympian Goddesses in the Horoscope, then you now have a 15 planet astrology (10 planets plus Chiron and the Goddesses) with somewhat more equal numbers of guys and gals (9 to 6). In other words, you have a modern astrology which reflects the reality of modern life since at least the 70's. Women have begun to achieve significantly more power and visibility, but are still clearly biased against via such factors as the glass ceiling.

I can tell you as a professional astrologer that working with this material has absolutely been one of the most transformative and liberative processes I have experienced. I offer much thanksgiving to the Goddess for manifesting through Demetra and honor the many doors that she opened with this work.
